It may not be relevant but the short list of greatest people after Gandhi did not have Abulkalam Azad's name.Similarly many great songs werent even mentioned.What about the immortal song of "Jugnu" by Noor Jahan;"Aaj ki raat saz-e-dil-e-purdard na ched".
The juri selected three songs from Movie Guide rating them to be the best of 20 Hindi Film Songs ever. It shocks me to see the hon`ble juri members simply forgot the songs sung by legendary play back singer Mukesh Chandra Mathur whose melodius voice not only made RK`s films so famous but he was the one who brought music directors Shankar Jai Kishan,Kalyan ji Anand ji, lyrisist- Shelendra ,Hasarat Jaipuri and several others to lime light There are atleast 20 best songs sung by him on the list of Listners best Choice. It also astonishes- how the hon`ble members of Juri - Mahendra Kapoor,Manna Dey, the play back singers of his time also forgot Mukesh and the songs sung by him . Without the songs of Mukesh,the selectioin of 20 Best Hindi Film Songs Ever appears a miss and incomplete .

Jury seems to have loved Guide, though songs are great, of course.
I expected to see Mohammed Rafi dominatiing the list and it has happened.
However, as pointed out, Mukesh has been given a raw deal, and Talat Mohammed too.

My all time great is Pankaj Mullik,as a singer and as a music director.He got just a Padmasri when cricketers who score just one century or take 10 wickets are also honoured at the same level.
There are some memorable songs. Most of them sung by great persons. People don't mention, 'Tujhe Dekha...' from DDLJ. It just seems, we keep listening to great Hindi film music, but it appears the music changes a bit in appearance. It is pretty apparent, that Karan Johar really is inspired by Mr. Yash Chopra. But he makes really mushy movies, not to be associated with the name Musharraf. It seems, modernity can be sentimental, but people really want to hold on to sentiment, in modern times.
It`s just ridiculous and disgusting to see that jury could n`t notice any of the songs sung by legendary play back singer Mukesh . There are not less than 20 best songs sung by him in various movies and are on the top of listener`s choice list. I wonder, how songs sung by Mukesh could have escaped the notice of Jury and why no mention has been made any where in the article/ above report as also from the readers forum.

Song is an art and all the art is a useless thing.
Between us is an apparent difference of age but the not so subtle difference of perspective. The olden golden songs that you listen today, I used to listen to them at your age just how you listen to the present day music. In those 50s, 60s ..., I used to like the songs of 30s, 40s. For us the real music was the classical music and not this cheap filmi music.
It wasn't that I didn't like the Golden period songs of 50s, 60s then but there is a common sense that says old is gold. The Indian government banned filmi songs and we would tune to radio ceylon at that time. We liked the filmi songs but still when you ask someone he would say classical songs are of better quality.
The same thing is happening today. 50 years down the line, people would say the 2000 was the best period of filmi music. We had a grammy and oscar winning A R Rehman who is missing in the list somehow. I don't fancy my chances to hear what people would say 50 years down the line but you have some good chances to see the common sense repeats it folly again.
@Jackass- You know what Mr.Jackass. This name really suits you. Lol. These songs are old but they are definitely gold. These songs are from the time when the best music was being made. The time when gods of voice like Rafi, Kishore, Lata and Asha were in full flow. We dont need to live in "Radio Ceylon''s time to like these songs. Anyone, as young as me (18years old) or as old as 70s, who loves music and wants to listen to the purest and its best type would agree that those years, when the above magicians were in effect were clearly the best times for Indian music. You may be young and like many of youngsters today, prefer the new age stuff but that wont change the truth. Ask any of those new-age musicians and they would tell you the truth. If you love the soul in music or love music in general, then you would realize what I'm saying.
Jury isnt made of oldies. These are the musicians that work today and most of which you prefer listening to. They know what the real music and where the quality lies. And they also know that they can never achieve it. Its sad but its true. :)

Sorry, Fazal. I don't buy your view on Kishore being better than Rafi Sa'ab. I certainly don't accept that Rafi Sa'ab had only one timber and style. He had a range as wide, if not wider than Kishore. The legions of fans of Rafi Sa'ab will never accept that he was 2nd to Kishore as won't Kishore's die-hard fans that Rafi Sa'ab was numero uno so let's just agree to disagree. Several people have tried to sing like Rafi Sa'ab but I have grudgingly accepted that only one person has come closest to him. Even Rafi Sa'ab's son concedes that Anil Bajpai is about the best Rafi clone. Check him out on YouTube esp "Govinda aala re..."! I've been to all his (Bajpai's) concerts in Chennai and you have to feel the hysteria when Bajpai sings. Whats more... Bajpai NEVER EVER sings ANY Rafi Sa'ab's song refering to a paper.... he has memorized all of them. Rafi Sa'ab is the God of music!
@Mr.Pankaj- Sorry for a late response. But i would definitely let you know somethings for your knowledge`s sake.
Firstly, when Rafi sang for Kishoreda, at that point Kishore was more of an actor. As I said before, Kishore was dragged into acting by this brother before way before he could explore his immense talent in singing. So, for the sake of success of the film, he thought of letting a established singer sing for him. But, soon the great S.D Burman spotted the 'khazana' of a singer in him. It was then that Aradhana came along and Kishoreda started scoring goals after goals.

Rafi gave playback to Kishore on Screen (Film Ragini). I think this is the proof of the pudding!
For my knowledge sake, I would like to know how many non-filmi albums were done by Kishore? I know Rafi & Talat did a lot of Ghazal Albums and so did Mukesh.
@Prashant - You are bang on! Kishoreda was a maverick. His voice had a eternal resonance and "Khanak" that was unique! Voice was uniquely deep and the throw, punch and power in his voice make him the most difficult singer to sing. Rafi was undoubtedly a fabulous singer but Kishore Kumar was pure genius. Here is an anecdote (story) I would love to share with you all.
I had always been a Mohd. Rafi fan, since I was a kid. Like my parents and friends, I, obediently followed the tradition to listen and admire Rafi and only Rafi. His “Makhmali awaaz” was always a treat to my ears. I would sing his songs at the school and with friends. People liked me because I was eventually, if not easily, able to sings those classical numbers. I was admired.
But, then I had a chance to listen to Kishore da`s songs. I was moved! His voice was uniquely LARGE. The base in his voice was incredibly deep, unlike any other singer. His voice was inimitable. Such strong voice, reflected pronounced masculinity. His songs like ‘Hal Kya Hai Dilon Ka’, ‘Phoolon ke rang se’, ‘Aapke Anurodh Pe’ ‘Kuch to log kaheinge’ and many others, are great examples of his talent. Kishoreda`s ability to sing such diverse moods and styles can clearly be witnessed in above songs!! Interestingly, just notice the change in timber and texture he brings singing these diverse songs- something which Rafi never did; he just sang with the same timber/texture. Kishore could sing all the way from his upper part of the chest like in "Aapke Anurodh Pe" (where his voice comes out with so much depth and yet, he doesnt run out of air!!), then his throat like in Hal Kya Hai Dilon (his vocal chord sounds like this huge rod with incredibly high radius!) and all the way up to his mouth in Pyaar Manga Hai Tumhi Se(where he just whispers and the romance spreads in the air!!). I challenge anyone to do justice to these songs! Kumar Sanu and Abhijeet just copy one little "pehlu" or "style" of Kishore`s versatilty (just make Kishoreda`s voice thinner by 50% and add some nasality in it and you get Kumar Sanu, Yodell-ish singing style that too with erratic consistency and you get Abhijeet). One little Rang of multi-coloured Kishoreda has made their lives!! Just think about it. You would see many singers singing Rafi`s songs, giving him a good enough tribute. There are Sonu Nigam, Shabbir, Mohammad Aziz and many others who are fairly good at it (who have even sung O duniya ke rakh wale, the hardest song Rafi ever recorded and infact, Sonu has done considerable justice) But Kishore Kumar was UNIQUE. No one ever had such a tremendous throw and solidarity. AND now we can just imagine what Kishoreda could have done if he was classically trained from his childhood. His voice would have broken the boundaries and CONQUERED the world!!
The khanak in kishoreda`s voice was a god-gift and the almighty has not given even one-tenth of that charismatic resonance that kishoreda was rewarded with, to anyone else.
Kishoreda, sadly, recoginzed his talent quite late, way after he was already dragged into acting by his elder brother, Ashok Kumar-- and surprisingly enough, his acting skills are still admired. What a multi-talented individual he was indeed. But its sad that we lost him early.
Conclusively, I hope and pray that the Rafi`s fans break their old bias for an hour and just listen to the songs I have recommended above! And as for Rafi, he has been my guru and idol and I always will be his fan.

In my opinion Rafi as a singer was much much bigger than Kishore as a singer(not .Kishore as an artist ) There must not be any comparison with Rafi to kishore as just on singing capabilities there is no match for rafi sahab.The versatality that rafi possesed is not compared to any singer in history of indian cinema.He ruled bollywood music from late 40s till 80s with only brief period of "take over" by kishore for few years (between late 60s and early 70s).I wll quote one recent TOI article about rafi sahab that has put it like this :"If there are 101 ways of saying "I love you" in a song, Mohammed Rafi knew them all. The awkwardness of puppy love, the friskiness of teen romance, the philosophy of unrequited love and the anguish of heartbreak - he could explore every crevice of ardour. It wasn't just love, his voice could capture the navras of life - a failed poet's melancholy, a fiery unionist's vim, a debt-ridden farmer's despair, really anybody at all. Rafi, whose career spanned nearly four decades, was a singer for every season and every reason."
The young generation who dont know much beyond RDB and laxmikant/pyarelal generally make a debate out of it(Rafi vs Kishore).But for all those who know really well about old hindi music will never discuss this "non issue".
Kishore,Mukesh,Manna dey,Talat etc were all great singers ,but please dont compare them with Rafi !!

Mr Arghwan, I will not put down Mohd Rafi to prove my point that Kishore was a more talented singer. In fact I am a huge Rafi fan. I just think that due to sheer God gifted talent Kishore was better! Kishore never learnt to sing from anyone. He was untrained, maverick and sheer genius. It is just amazing how a man who had no knowledge of even sa re ga ma could croon like Kishore did. Rafi, Mannadey etc were all classically trained. In fact there was a time when Rafi sahab was so demoralized because of Kishore's talent and success that he had almost stopped singing. Naushad then visited Rafi and told him that 'how can an untrained singer be your competion?' and motivated him again to start singing. At the end of the day Rafi has sung some gems in 60's. Kishore has sung some gems in 70's. Let everyone enjoy their favourite singer. Why to proclaim who is better? This what I was trying to tell Ammad Ali from Pakistan. It is not good to make sweeping statements like 'greatest ever'. They are not in good taste.
And have you heard the song 'Tum bin jaoon kahan'? It was sung by both Kishore and Rafi seperately for a film. When critics heard the version sung by Kishore, they acknowledged that 'no one can sing this song like that'. Please listen to both versions with an open mind. You will reach the same conclusion that Rafi did. This song clealry demonstrates the genius that was Kishore.
Anyway, this is too time consuming and futile. This discussion has no end. So I guess I will enjoy Kishore Kumar and you should enjoy Mohd Rafi. Both are fantastic singers. I am sure even vitriolic individuals like Mr Mukherjee would agree.

Kishore himself failed to match the emotions needed for the song Nafrat ki duniya ko and then Rafi sang that song and rest is wow.. another song of the movie muqaddar ka sikandar was zindagi to bewafa hai was sung by Rafi because of the Kishore's failure to sung the song with the emotons needed.
