IT’s Just Too Much
I was surprised to read your Bangalore Diary (Mar 28) carping on Infy and Wipro being granted government land, given the other dubious reasons governments in India ‘donate’ land for. At least Infy and Wipro put their cash to good use, whether in business or in charity. How many other corporates getting free land in Karnataka can say that?
Ila Bhat, on e-mail

You rightly highlight the undue importance our IT industry enjoys. If these ceos grumble about Bangalore infrastructure, the media gets excited for days together, forgetting problems in other cities. Their demand for two lakh sq ft of subsidised land reminds me of the amusing statement made recently by the ceo of a top branded hospital chain to build one in each of nearly 600 districts while people just cry for higher investment on better sanitation and clean drinking water. The craze for IT is so deep that the much-publicised ‘knowledge economy’ is often a euphemism for advancing IT interests to the neglect of other industries.

Our IAS officers and government officials are not aware of computer technologies and these infosys and wipro are taking undue mileage from government. These private companies are not involved in any social obligation. They are not giving reservation to SC/STs in the jobs. The IT related jobs are very easy and can be
done by any 12th grade indian students. As india has crores of graduate and post graduate Engineers and
that is why only these guys are getting selected for these jobs. Indian companies are mainly involved in developing application softwares. America don't give higher end computers to India on the security pretext. As a result result we don't have state of the art computer hardwares. Most of Americans nowadays don't go for study and are mostly interested in hollywood, games and sex. This has created shortage of skilled man power. That is why some software development contracting jobs are coming to these companies. If India really wants to be super power in IT then Government should go ahead in setting up manufacturing industries to manufactuare ICs, SAN storage devices, Networking equipments, and higher end computing technologies. The UPA government should fullfil its promise in providing jobs to SC/STs in the private sectors. -Vande Mataram /||\

Logic of subsidy of 2 crores for cash rich IT Cos is

So that they create more jobs in the city rather than somewhere else and the economic impact of such job creation is manifolds 2 Crore.

Perfect business deal.

The local press can do more than what it is doing today in INFRASTRUCTURE sector.

Identify 5 -10 Projects (flyovers, widening of roads etc )

And highlight minute details of each project and reasons for delay. Identify the even minor issues like procedural delays, Bottlenecks , indivisuals (Name them) Put pressure on them directly.

Almost pedantic.

So far there lot of ranting in Media about agony and problems but is not focussed and detailed.
Now Gowda/Singh share the blame in public perception change that and be more granular.

Lame. Kinda surprising, because you used to have interesting things to say. I will try to think of it as you trying to meet the Outlook quality standards. Though I would say it is kinda early in life for your writing to get watery like Mehta's.

The snooty comments on Premji and Murthy is just loose cannon journalism -- all bristling criticism and no solutions. At least they spoke up, now that you've deemed it a crime, maybe they will think twice before doing that again.

They get land cheap because they bring development, and other states, knowing that, are willing to sell them land for even less. Duh. Maybe I am reading it wrong, maybe the silly Marxist in you were outraged, and wants land sold cheap to IT havenots? You never know.

Only journalists, bureaucrats and diplomats buy Encyclopaedias. The facts in there are useful in appearing knowledgeable, breaking awkward silences at the dinner table, and filling column space as you show here. Go get some perspective. Oh wait, that needs work.

Sorry if that hurt. Think of it next time you *choose* to let snootiness pass into print.

Is being unable to think straight the preeminent prerequisite for publishing in Loutlook? A skewed perspective, and a crooked bent of mind: are they the must-haves for Loutlook staffers? Question arises because while Bangalore is crumbling, this fellow is bashing -- get this right -- Azim Premji and Narayana Murthy!

Roads in central Bangalore are in a mess. In the suburbs, they don't even exist except as dirt tracks. Cost of living is skyrocketing. Real estate within city limits is out of the reach of all but the upper crust, as also good education for children. Crime is on the rise: muggings to murders, not a day passes without gory news. Land sharks are ruling the roost. Life in the city has become a daily struggle for citizens, barring for the filthy rich.

And Bangalore is crumbling not only because an inept and venal government couldn't care less, but also because a highly politicized, porn-peddling, sensation-mongering media couldn't care less either. Ask anybody living in Bangalore, or for that matter anywhere in Karnataka, and they will tell you that the stink of corruption all around them makes that of the city's overflowing sewers seem like fragrance. No newspaper or magazine is coming out with any exposes of this rot, no journalist is putting his neck on the line to get that shocking scoop revealing the skeletons in the government's cupboard, and no editor is penning fiery editorials that ought to shame the administration into action. In fact, these chaps
seem to be actually busy lining their pockets giving good press to the powers that be!

As if that isn't obscenity enough, we have fellows like this Prasad targeting not the people's 'representatives' but Premji and Narayana Murthy. If these gentlemen hadn't helped create Bangalore's boom, Karantaka's Lalus would be making their money out of fodder too, not living off the new wealth that the IT boom generated.

Maybe these "cyber rajas" need to invite our Loutlook zamindar over to high tea and honour him with the mandatory suit length and bottle of scotch. So that he will stop bashing them and scope out some other innocent target.

Outlook certainly knows nothing. Murthy and Premji along with TVS, Muthiah group, MRF etc have brought self respect to South Indians. The IT industry especially has brought development and economic growth to Bangalore, and later to Hyd and Chennai, now it's moving to the rest of the area as well. So any amount of concession can only be reaped back manyfold by the govt and with that politicians like Krishna and Naidu who despite having nothing to do with actual growth creamed it for self-glory!
Now the same thing was done in Bombay (before and continues even now) when the so called 'bombay club' of industries under the garb of national protection extracted concessions and political support from the govt of India (which prevented foreign and local competition to the already established goondas- but nobody questioned them. The kind of gol-maal that was&is indulged by Bajaj and Reliance and the Birlas(just to name a few) is legendary. But again no one questions their tactics. But when simpletons like Murthy question the whimsical ways of the babus in power, then the North- India biased media cries fowl! Bangalore's infrastructure is bad because it is purely self invested- Unlike Delhi where GOI pours money on roads, flyovers and imported coaches for METRO, Bangalore and Chennai are supported purely by state govts. While Mumbai and Delhi airports which are prefered hubs for loss making AirIndia and until recently solely allowed port of call for major international airlines- which is why their is increased passenger traffic and profitability of these 2 airports, Bangalore has been forced to go for private airport, while Chennai airport despite negligence by New Delhi, is the third busiest airport in India, receives no GOI attention for modernisation.
So before you media guys draw out your pens like swords, think logically about the double standards we have for north and south india!

Well said and nice analysis. The infrastructure would not bound to Government, the question is that, can Bangalore take so much of traffic/IT Companies/Outsiders Migration? If same situation continues even if they install S.M.Krishna again nothing can be done. It is better for these Cyber Rajas to move outside Bangalore, this is good for them as well as for Bangalore. SAVE BANGALORE!!!

As Gopal said in this column, I also feel that Chennai is being neglected by the central government for airport modernisation programmes. Aviation minister Praful says "Delhi and Mumbai will be modernised first and then he will look in to Chennai and Kolkata". While Bangalore and Hyderabad too getting new greenfield airports, Chennai and Kolkata lags behind in this aspect. It clearly gives a message that Chennai Airport will not be modernised atleast until 2008. Looking in to the future, we can see new airports in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad while Chennai will be lacking in Airport facilities. Chennai is being favoured as the best IT destination along with Bangalore eventhough itz perception is less. It is a well known statistical data that 50 to 70% of IT people hails from Tamil Nadu. Hence, itz time for Chennai to get a modern airport in place. I request Tamil Nadu CM Dr.J.Jayalalithaa to fight for our cause and achieve the goal on par with other cities.
