Debate over a critical office

The 10 per cent rule was established by V.G. Mavalankar and incorporated later in the Directions for the functioning of the Lok Sabha as Direction 121, though it did not mention the LoP as such. The 1998 law concerning the facilities to be given to leaders and whips of recognised parties and groups, which fixes 55 as the minimum number of members required for recognition as a Parliamentary Party in the lower House, does not mention the LoP either. It is the 1977 statute on the LoP’s salary that does so. And that definition says the LoP shall be the leader of the party in opposition with the greatest numerical strength and “recognised as such” by the Speaker. While the statute itself is silent on it, the question arises if the Speaker, while recognising the LoP, needs to go by parliamentary precedent and Direction 121.

A recognised leader of the opposition is necessary for the proper and harmonious functioning of Parliament and for the working of several of the recently enacted laws. Legal ambiguity, the Congress party’s own flawed record and the BJP’s triumphalism over its rival’s poor electoral performance, should not stand in the way of an important parliamentary office being filled.

Priya Madhavan, you're correct. Everything is poster's opinion. Sometimes even in mountains of all sort of evidence you can find patterns. You are at liberty to consider it and discard it. The ease with which people can assume "hatred for Hinduism" in another person and allow themselves to get personal is a sign. It only strenghtns the view that calling for depoliticising is a very good idea indeed.

Note how this slimy jihadi anwaar neatly pretends that the Sunnis(who are the real majority) share any power with shias when they are the majority -- the real intent is for sunnis to wipe out the shias and ahmadis and all other subsects, before they can focus on the non believers.

>> Not long ago there was inseparable Yadav-muslims aliance that prevented riots in UP and Bihar for over a decade. We need more aliances like this.

That is the political problem you are referring to, not the solution.

The solution is that Muslims should show, over a sustained period, that they shall vote and behave like other citizens of India. Not get agitated on extraneous issues, indulge in riots on minor issues in faraway lands, vote as a block.etc. Over time, parties might treat them as normal voters, and stop trying to lure them by antics like dressing up as an Arab, or parading an Osama look alike, or giving money to Imams, or ...

" the feeling of 'an ashuddh woman (with opinions)'.."

Ms Malhotra lets the cat out of the bag; her Freudian slip gives an insight into her hatred for Sanskrit, part of a larger hatred for all things Hindu.

Ashuddh means unclean. It is being interpreted as misogyny. Hindu rituals demand a high level of cleanliness and a menstruating woman is considered unclean and cannot participate in rituals.

Ketaki is a flower, very fragrant but not used for ritualistic worship on account of a curse of Lord Shiva. While there is a mythological story, there also appears to be a practical reason.

The leaves around the Ketaki flower have hard, sharp and serrated edges on account of which there are a lot of dead bees and other insects in the vicinity of this flower. Since priests found it offensive to offer dead insects along with flowers for ritualistic worship, thd Ketaki flower was proscribed.

ULTA CHOR KOTWAL KO DAANTEY !!!

If allegations of the US snooping on BJP are vindicated, the Indian collaborators of UPA must be treated as traitors.
The country wants to know the truth as its sovereignty has been compromised by the Congress-led UPA.
It is meaningless summoning the US diplomats to South Block or discuss with Karry on July 31 or Obama during Modi ji’s visit in Sept.
Russia or China won’t have handled it ,this way.
India must deal with it professionally.keeping its self esteem intact.
Can the NTRO not take counter steps to block the outflow of data to the US.

Countering a divisive agenda

The plight of Ms. Mirza is a mere symptom of a larger malaise creeping into public life. It is the assertion of a distasteful combination of ultra-nationalism and communalism....The BJP in the Narendra Modi era has to decide whether it will continue to suffer the polarising tactics of some its members and its extended parivar, or intervene to arrest the retrogressive trend. No responsible leadership can afford to allow fringe elements to indulge in divisive behaviour.

We don't need this education: Say no to Dina Nath Batra's books - Editorial, Hindustan Times

Blowing out birthday candles is apparently part of western culture and should be shunned. Instead one’s birthday ought to be celebrated by wearing swadeshi clothes, doing a havan, praying to ishtadev and feeding cows. Normally, such exhortations would be dismissed as not being worth the paper they are written on. But when the author is none other than Dina Nath Batra, whose civil suit earlier led to the pulping of eminent scholar Wendy Doniger’s seminal work on Hinduism, we must take this seriously.

It is highly questionable whether students will be able to develop moral values and imbibe our rich culture after studying Mr Batra’s works. However, it speaks volumes for the narrow-mindedness of Mr Batra that he thought it fit to spearhead the movement against Ms Doniger’s book, which by all accounts is a pathbreaking work. There are many like Mr Batra who see plots to subvert our culture in books, paintings, plays and other creative works.

Hinduism and Indian culture do not need ambassadors like Mr Batra, they have withstood the test of time precisely by being eclectic and inclusive. Apart from anything else, it is to teach children factually incorrect information. India does not lack scholars on culture and heritage. Mr Batra and his ilk are certainly not among them.

Of the riots are BJP/RSS work. But the point is that why it takes a spark for full fledged riot? Communalism is in people's mind - both hindus and muslims. It is not law and order problem. It is a political issue that needs political solution. Not long ago there was inseparable Yadav-muslims aliance that prevented riots in UP and Bihar for over a decade. We need more aliances like this.

U-turn at Geneva may erode goodwill for Modi

The message that India gave in Geneva is as clear as it can get to the rest of the world. Indian governments don’t respect contracts, made legally by previous democratic governments. We are not trustworthy business partners. That puts political and economic risk at the highest ratings. You don’t have to like it, but you cannot do business, or trade without trust that everyone will honour their contracts in good faith. Would any customer trust a business that has a track record of reneging on its legal contracts?

Brazil withdraws ambassador from Tel Aviv

Brazil's Ministry of External Affairs, the Itamaraty, issued a note Wednesday evening saying it viewed the "escalation of violence between Israel and Palestine" as "unacceptable," and that Brazil "strongly condemns the disproportionate use of force by Israel in the Gaza Strip." The note said Brazil's ambassador in Tel Aviv, Henrique Pinto, had been recalled. > "Israel provoked this bloodshed by its massive arrest campaign of over 500 Hamas supporters in the West Bank and the killing of several unarmed civilians there after the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli settlers. Israel's security services knew they were dead from the beginning, and knew this was the act of a rogue cell, NOT ordered by Hamas, but its government cynically hid these facts in service of a hysterical propaganda campaign to justify an attack on Gaza. When Hamas did not rise to the bait, and exerted efforts to halt the firing of rockets by smaller groups in Gaza, Israel escalated by killing several Hamas militants, provoking the desired response of rockets fired at Israel."

Israel's subterfuge was matched by its propaganda, but this time it did not succeed as well as during previous battles because there is an increasing suspicion in the West of Israel's motives.

>> "Israel's aim in all of this was to keep the Palestinians weak, divided and under control, which is an overriding objective for a government that intends to maintain permanent control of all the occupied territories, as Netanyahu himself revealed in an interview two weeks ago. This objective was endangered by the beginnings of an inter-Palestinian reconciliation, and the formation of a national unity government, accepted by the US and the EU. Once the operation started, Israel discovered that Hamas had greater rocket capabilities and a more extensive tunnel system than it had suspected, thus leading to an extensive ground campaign that shows no signs of ending."

Israel's divide and rule policy got a jolt with the inter-Palestinian reconciliation agreement. It had to act!

Israelis look ridiculous when they try to show themselves as better than those "terrorists" Hamas. The ruling Likkud party's major component is the former Herut party of the former Prime Minister Menachem Begin, who himself was a terrorist who blew up the King David Hotel in 1946. Netanyahu's government has extremist coalition partners, e.g. the Jewish Home Party and others,  who do not only work for continued expansion of occupation but do not want any Palestinians living in Palestine.

That is actually the real point. If the original community's link with the language is an arbitrary link then why doubt a "western" scholar like Wendy Doniger being way more Sanskrit literate than some of these mindless desi fans. It's not her fault..(and you can't have it both ways), for the difficulty they have with swallowing her presence seems to have to do a lot  with the feeling of 'an ashuddh woman (with opinions)'..

It is very tough to remove caste from Sanskrit, linguistic science may make claims that will work in a laboratory, practical world tells us something different.
