A Maiden Over, Nothing More?

Don’t give up on Rahul yet (If the Family Loses This Hand...). His late grandmother Indira was anything but the dumb doll she was dubbed to be. He is a political thoroughbred, politics runs in his family.

Mickie Sorabjee, Mumbai

The Congress won’t go anywhere. Because more than half the morons who are screaming for a Modi-fied India voted for the Congress the last time round. It’s like cricket. Man of the series and people bow down to the cricketer, a duck in the series and they go pelting stones at his house, but another man of the series and it’s back to demi-god worship again.

The Congress of today has no semblance to the party that was founded by the stalwarts of the nation. To call it the Indian National Congress as the press at large continues to do is the same as perpetuating the Gandhi name that the Nehru family continues to destroy.

Silver, Delhi

“India,” says Mainstream editor Sumit Chakravartty, “will be poorer without the Congress....” I don’t know about India becoming poorer but many in the media will surely feel orphaned.

Narayan G.N., Mumbai

I wonder why there is so much fear and alarm over the prospect of the BJP forming a government and Modi becoming the PM. It’s supposed to spell doom for the country and its minorities. The fact is, no such thing will happen. Our Constitution, the President and the legal system will never permit any such thing to take place.

Navin Malhotra, Delhi

History is full of examples where rulers and their families were thrown into the dustbin. Nothing terrible happened as a result of such events.

Who is afraid of President Modi? Precisely none, other than another president—of the Congress party, Sonia Gandhi.

C.V. Venugopalan, Palakkad

The BJP is offering to the people of India a man-eater when it says it is a friendly feline to guard you and your property while the Congress is giving us a donkey when it says it is a horse to gallop.

Rightly it should be Nehru-Gandhi family Mukt Bharat.Congress people are so slavish to the family a mild remark by Subramaniam Swami that Priyanka is a drunkard becomes such a big subject for these shameless slaves. Not a day passes when Congressmen don't call Modi a murderer but then it is ok because he is a Hindu.Everything about the present day Gandhis is shrouded in mystery, yet they rule us.The family never state what their religion is.Once when Rahul Gandhi was asked about his religion his evasive reply was that it is the same as the colour of our national flag.Is iit not a serious matter that we should know the relgious adherence of this family? No Catholic, save for Kennedy, could become the President of US.No Catholic can become PM of Englad ,while no Protestant can become the president in France.Yet,Hindus are expected to keep quiet by the secular brigade not to know the religion of the Gandhis.Yet again there is this mystery as to what is Sonia's ailment for her to visit US so often spending huge sums of tax payers' money. And the how does this Priyanka pop up only during election time? And that disgraceful thing that a big cheat like Robert Vadra is exempt from security check at airports.Congress is just a firm owned by the Nehru-Gandhi family and for the good of this country it should be wiped out from the Indian political scene.

"Is India without Congress really such a good idea?" wonders Uttam Sengupta.
and I wonder if it was similar when some were wondering "is state without church really such a good idea?"
or those "is creation without creator really such a good idea?"

Analogy might not be an "apple" to "apple" one, but the fear of diversion from the known and established, is same.

But the short history of Congress is interesting; and cunning too, I may add.

"1948: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is assassinated by right-winger Nathuram Godse"
Withstanding the fact that Gandhi left Congress in 1932; so did Godse, around same time.

And the story of post-independence Congress does not start from 1948, but 1947, when Jawahar Lal Nehru was superimposed over Sardar Ballabh Bhai Patel and Acharya Kripalani.

Typical Outlook speak. The usual rubbish about Modi and the BJP.

The only thing I took from this article is that Indira Gandhi is responsible for the emergence and rise of Modi, so if he runs amok, blame her.

it was Indira Gandhi as the Congress president in 1959 who recommended the creation of Gujarat as a separate state

If she hadn't been so stupid as to suggest a Gujarat state, Modi would have had no platform.

Dear Readers, There was a news item, from FORBES, I think,  that Sonia is the richest person, richer than Queen Elizabeth. What business empire the family of Nehru was running Sonia to inherit?  Obviously the wealth she holds only what the nation has lost to her shady dealings. Natwar singh has told of the commission in oil purchases from Iraq and other OPEC. How much of it went to congress party? WE see more than the quoted loss of 1.6 lak crores in 2G which has gone into her kitties. Kalmadi is made the front end to face the charges in Common wealth games and we see the hand of Sonia very much behind it for major share. PMO, the perennial fountain of raw lies told that no file was sent to sonia for seeing and approval. This was blown by the version of chidambaram that political decision related files were sent to Sonia for approval which means she could have demanded seeing every file to give approval to ensure that there was her personal advantage. In the "so sorry" serial, one video shows that Man Mohan singh was sitting idling with a fly swatter, while all files are moving to Sonia for approval and back to PMO. Although it was a satire, it was unshakeable truth. The sad state of economy, administrtion, non solution of problems, national law and order problem etc., are due to Manmohan singh who looked more like a dignified national peon to party president than a Prime minister. His non assertion of authority to put down the foot on,  emboldened the minister rats of his cabinet to  jump and play as they pleased ignoring his presence. The farm loan waiver, food security, MNREGA are some of the schemes which are boasted to be due to the economics wisdom of Sonia but in practice, they proved otherwise. year after year, the railways were the victims to the whims of economic illiterates like Lallu, Mamta by their popular budgets. Such vaccums were associated with the coalition for the sole purpose of holding on to power. But how to foot the losses which is the fact. Man Mohanji should have told back sonia to mind her business as president instead of poking nose into his domain. Rahul will never fit into the post of PM since it really demands good grey matter. To reverse the  economic and administrative damages We need a ceaseless dynamic leadership which can well orchestrate the resoures and encourage the youth force to put maximum energy in the right path of recovery. The damages suffered so far cannot be reversed in  a matter of five years as fervently hoped. Five years will be necesssary to reverse and reach the zero point back before going positive. Almighty, please  give the knowledge to our voters to choose the correct party which can really bale out the nation from the crisis.

The chamchas of the dynasty are in full swing in the Outlook today. I hope they will be rewarded adequately for their services - perhaps a chance to kiss and wipe some dynasty bottom. These slaves have no sense of integrity and self-worth; they enriched themselves with the bones that the dynasty has been throwing at them all these years and ejaculate at the thought of Indira imposing emergency. These chamchas are wilfully blind to the rampant mega-scale corruption of the past decade, how congress exploited every fault line in the society for electoral gain, how congress sliced and diced and divided the society based on religion, caste, class, language and region (while creating terrorism in Punjab and naxalism in the rest of the country to name a couple of examples of the consequences of their policies), how the congress (except the brief period under Rao) peddled and promoted poverty in the name of socialism (so they could give out doles and pretend to be the saviors, as they are doing now with this and that schemes), how congress went soft on terrorism (we lost track of the number of terrorist incidents across the country in the past decade, most of them unsolved, possibly because of orders from high up), how congress created a hostile environment for businesses and drove foreign investment out of the country and how the dynasty desecrated the constitution by appointing a puppet PM. These paid chamchas have been peeing in their pants at the thought of their masters losing the election, so they pulled out all stops in deifying the dynasty. Unless we wipe off this cabal of so-called journalists and self styled activists that worship the dynasty, we have no hope of developing as a society and country.

What is the need to write an obituary now?

That aside, let us get a few things straight. Congress won 145 seats in 2004 and 206 seats in 2009. The increase of 61 seats blinded the Congress and a lot of political analysts to a few mundane issues.

The most significant fact was that Congress increased its vote share ONLY BY 2% between 2004 and 2009. This should have told everyone that what Congress experienced in 2009 was not growth but a fluke. But people did not see it. PC had the galls to say in parliament that BJP can never come to power in India again.

Congress has never grown in the last 20 years. BJP, by contrast, has seen both growth and decay. And now it is growing after a period of decay.

A decay for the Congress will be good at this stage because it will remove a lot of dead wood. And if Congress positions itself well, it can grow again. The party's greatest strength is that it has footprint in almost all parts of India.

And whether Congress can grow aagin will also depend on how well(or bad) the BJP govt performs.

This is the advantage for people to whom history begins new everyday.

A lot of people have forgotten what the EC was like before TN Seshan. Both Indira and Rajiv Gandhi treated the EC like SOnia Gandhi today treats the CBI. And the EC in those days worked like the CBI only-it faithfully carried out the wishes of the PM.

The statement by the writer is total BS.

13D/Akash Verma,

The truth is the CON-gress Party has never won a genuine poll victory after 1980...

The CON party won 1985 and 1991 elections only because of the assasination of its prime leader right before and during election and same extensively covered by electronic media to generate sympathy..

2004 election and 2009 elections no doubt helped CONgress to get to power but consider this - In both these elections CONGRESS party got less than 29% of popular vote; In contrast, In 1977, an year CONGRESS was routed post emergency the party got 34% popular votes.

2004 and 2009 election wins for CONgress were due to smart work by backroom boys. THe clever projecttion of YSR and alliance with KCR and Laloo and DMK helped the party to get ahead of BJP and then they used help of the old guard of CPM to create UPA1. UPA2 was possible only because they had a Raj Thakeray, Chiranjeevi and Vijaykanth to split anti UPA Votes in Maha, AP and TN>

But as they say, life is a full circle and at some point the party runs out of luck. Whether CONgress is completely eliminated or remains is not the question now. The question is how much CONGRESS must get to be in opposition. I would say that the party should get such a tally that it must make the 1977 elections look as a victory for the party.

Yes, the party should get under 20% popular vote and less than 85 LS seats , only then the punishment will be fitting..

So Long as Hinduism is dominant faith in this country, there is nothing for religious minorites (and atheists) to really fear. The one and only case of religious minorities ethnically getting cleansed (without return back) post 1947 has happened in Kashmir Valley, in 1989-1990.

Muslims are doing better in BJP ruled states than the states ruled by SP Goondas or CON party crooks. Life goes on, this is a 5000 year civilization that has been largely tolerant by design.

The party should reinvent itself. and instead of being a family based party it should try to project capable people to forefront. The family members are incompetent and do not have a  capacity to revive the fortunes of corrupt congis. It had a chance to become a vibrant party under P V Narsimhan Rao but could not carry on the momentom and went back to the easy path of crawling to corrupt and incomepetent family. The resident psuedo-secularist commentator should understand that fanatical followers of diversity-intolerant coercive fear-controlled belief systems, have under the cloak of secularism been secretly pursuing their anti-Hindu agenda. Their intemperate remarks against icons of Hindu culture while openly supporting the fanatics of diversity-intolerant coercive fear-controlled belief systems, have succeeded in pushing more and more Hindus to the right.

Let every nationalist realize that anything that is good for India will be opposed by the psuedo-secularists. The stronger the psuedo-secularists oppose, the better it is for the prosperous future of India. This is a natural law.

The ultimate aim of all psuedo-secularists is to keep India weak, Hindus divided and keep India permanently subjugated to direct or indirect foreign rule.

Now as May 16th approaches, the psuedo-secularists voice becomes more and more shrill and desperate. Let every nationalist realize that if the person whom they want to vote is being strongly opposed by the psuedo-secularists, then that person is EXACTLY the right person for India's bright future.

In the current scenario, psuedo-secularists are strongly opposing Modi.
So we vote for Modi with passion and commitment. Vande Mataram !

@ Silver - "It is sad to see a magazine like Outlook getting some basic facts wrong. Indira Gandhi split from the original congress and formed the Congress (I) in 1977."

Actually, Mrs. Indira Gandhi split the Congress party twice, first in 1969 when she broke away to form the New Congress. The Old Congress retained the "pair of bullocks" symbol and the New Congress was allotted the "cow and calf" symbol.

Then, in 1977, after she was unseated in the general elections, she again split the party to form the Congress (Indira) party which was allotted the "Hand" symbol which is still in vogue.

The Congress party of today is the Congress of Indira Gandhi and not the Congress of Mahatma Gandhi, Patel and Nehru, the party which won for India her independence.
