Clarification

In Vrinda Gopinath’s opinion piece The Monologue of the Modi Mausi (Apr 7), the label “Hate Hags or Hacks” contained in a draft version of the article got into the magazine due to an editorial oversight. We apologise for any offence that might have been caused inadvertently.—Editor in-chief

Antidote to Doting

What was the point of Vrinda Gopinath’s article (The Monologue of the Modi Mausi, Apr 7)? In India there is freedom of expression, and these ladies are freely airing their political opinion. Agree or disagree, that’s their prerogative and, frankly, we should be fine with it. I also think it’s ridiculous to club Madhu Kishwar and Tavleen Singh—both of whom have some serious intellectual credibility—with Sandhya Jain, who is I am sure well-meaning but a little tunnel-visioned.

Zafar, Sydney

For 10 years, people have ganged up against Modi, spewing the vilest lies and venom, and he learnt to ignore them. Now when some people in the media do stand up for him, just see the outrage it has evoked.

Mangar, on e-mail

Outlook has really hit the jackpot by accident. The number of hilarious posts on its website mocking Ms Gopinath make entertaining reading. I like one which confers on her the moniker “garrulous granny”.

Mind the Ad

Apropos The Monologue of the Modi Mausi (April 7), I’m reminded of an old joke. The Devil’s chatting up people, inviting them into what seems like an opulent, luxurious abode. They get in and it’s actually an inferno. The Devil is heard   cackling with laughter, “What you saw earlier was what the advertising department put out!” Perhaps the bjp is nothing but a Bahut Jabardast Propaganda party.

ALREADY, Modi has unhinged the female brigade, by announcing a male ban on contesting Panchayat polls in his state.

And now, they will flock to him, abandoning their chamchas in the dynasty, in the hope that he will ban males from contesting national elections too.

True Vrinda, the secular cranks are still around, but they won't be when Modi comes to power - yes, that is our dream, our fervent hope - the Hindu Hridaya Samraat will correct the sins of ultra psuedo secularism. He will decimate the secular machinery, break its legs. The anti-Nehru, the anti-secular, the anti-commie, the ultra nationalist and the Hindu nationalist to correct the sins of the past.

What I fail to understand is why can't seculars look at Modi as the joke of history on them and a natural course correction?

Post the horrors of Partition, you tried to build an *inclusive* narrative whereby Muslims could be accommodated - *fair enough* -- now this narrative includes showing Islam in a certain light - *ok!* - this narrative included white-washing the records of – err, you used the word first – “jehad” waged on India since centuries -- *debatable, for does not history revisit upon those who do learn from her?* -- but why must this narrative also include showing Hinduism as nothing but pure evil, casteist, and misogynist?

So now then, when we on the “communal divide” are not ready to believe Modi as mass-murderer, isn’t that an ironic joke on you who believe in the Mughal rule as a peaceful reign, and subscribe to Gandhi as a peace-knitter between communities when he was responsible for the slaughter of Hindus prior to and during Partition? Yes Vrinda, it is neither you nor us, it is a joke of History.

You and your ilk subscribe to a perverse ideology of Gandhi who regarded Guru Gobind Singh, Rana Pratap and Shivaji as ‘misguided patriots’ and Khushwant who called them “anti-Muslim”; you and your friends advocate more Pakistans to be carved out of India, debating if we should give Kashmir away, debating if NE should be let go to China; now then, amidst the “ideas of India” manufactured by you and your ilk, this is our idea of India: janani janma-bhoomi-scha swargadapi gariyasi. Do you have any idea what joy it gave us communal people when the Hindu nationalist uttered these words in Ramlila Maidan? At Ramila Maidan…

The curbing of dissent and debate dates to Nehru’s treatment of the Sardar, Vrinda. Even today, dear Vrinda, is that duel between the two still on – we are but words and weapons of Nehru and Sardar who are at battle even in this moment. That is why we attack you, you, the ideological progeny of Nehru protecting his biological progeny. We avenge you the sins committed on the Sardar.

Call me communal Vrinda but it gives such joy to my heart when after all the op-eds you guys managed to write in the New York Times India Ink blog page a Uma Bharti still gets up in a town in Rajasthan – where by the way they have no illusions of the glory of Rana Pratap – and cries out loud in her vociferous voice ‘Jai Jai Sree Ram’ to a gathering of lakhs and lakhs, who, their hands raised, repeat the words, Jai Jai Sree Ram.

Kishore ,be fair,dont go overboard.

Every one has right to his or her views.

Honestly Madhu Kishwar ust cant stop when it comes to Modi, she over does it and left to her Modi is above Question and can do no wrong.I dont want to take calls on her about what she feels about him.

Tavleen has shown far more maturity,by asking some factual questions about Riots in the past and if at all anyone was punished.Tavleen ignores that all those convicted were by the intervention of the Supreme Court and not by the initiative of the Gujrat Govt.

Yes Tavleen, on Modi not taking direct Questions from the Media and just making speeches.Tavleen did not approve of it on Times Now and said India wants answers from its Leaders and what MMS and Sonia have done for 10 years must not be allowed.Sound reasoning.

Unlike Modi , Rahul doiesnt need any mousis. He has a achiever mummy and an efficient sister.  The author is cleverly trying to  support Modi  as if she is  abusing him. The tactic is to ensure Modis name co mes to print  while Rahuls name doesnt.

She is ably supported by people like Anwaar ( a frequent commenter) who acting as if they are opposed to Modi keep his name in print and online thereby trying to hide Rahuls name. They think due to this sort of tactics people will forget Rahul and vote for modi.

Rahul cannot be erased from peoples mind by this sort of silly tactics. Rahul has got the smartness and age on his side. He will crush this sort of twisted conspirators and ultimately win some day.

After getting slammed for her disgraceful, cringe-worthy gossip on Sunanda Pushkar, VG now degenerates into abuses about Mausis, hate hags and of course the  "Merchant of Death" (this seems to be in original English, like Shakespeare). Does she secretely fantasize about driving them to opinion-shaping suicide?

Are there a lot of nieces, love hags and "Rescuers of Life" among the Hate-Modi columnists? You mean they don't hate anybody in particular, just some hazy hate rants? VG falls far short in quantity of words compared to page-by-page-turner Aru Roy, apart from lacking buzz words like genocide, lebensraum, ghost stories etc. Nor does she hold a candle to Saba Naqvi, Barkha Dutt, Nidhi Razdan or Neena Vyas in the rant-against-Modi sweepstakes. I don't see these secular goddesses of our better nature flowing with the milk of human kindness. VG has a ling way to go before she can emulate Putana. However, keep the poison pen flowing, you'll get there.

So this is that infamous "Hate Hags" article.

As someone said (rephrased):
Outlook managed to do wonder, defended an alleged rapist and called those women who disagree- witches; all in single print.

It reinforces two idea;
You have to be an illogical, illiberal, immoral, ill-manner, intolerant, and all other 'il" to become an authentic "Left-liberal" (or any other authority of Abrahamic schools). More extreme you are that way, more successful you are this way.

Second, it also kind of gives weight to the stereotype that "women is the greatest enemy of women".
Here too, rather than defeating them by sound logic, Vinda ji turn to the cat-fight of "Hey you witch".
It wasn't all so unexpected when another fine lady from Congress, Priyanka Chaturvedi, jumped in joy:

Whenever we hear Narendra Modi speak at rallies, we are reminded of an age old internet joke where a flamboyant devil with the gift of the gab is braggingly giving glimpses of his realm to some curious visitors _a Hell Shining tour of sorts, so to speak. Taken in by the opulence and tranquillity of the territory they had heard such negative reports about, the naive souls succumb and readily opt for it as opposed to the drab and dreary abode of God’s Kingdom where Arch Angel sympathetically informs them that whatever they see here is what they get at face value.
Lo and behold! No sooner do the gullible make their choice and cross the forbidden threshold, they fall into a raging inferno even as the doors clang shut behind them and the sneering Devil is heard mocking that what they were shown outside was the advertising department and this was reality!! Just like the BJP? Bahut Jabardast Propoganda party!
