There is a place called Pakyong about thirty kilometers out of Gangtok in Sikkim. A smallish plateau where there is a proposal for setting up an airport in Sikkim. Place has a small hotel , post office , police station & a branch of State Bank. A standard Indian small town. Pakyong itself is not a scenic place to attract tourists like other famous tourist spots in that beautiful land.

What is of of interest in Pakyong is there is a National Research Centre for Orchids. An ICAR Orchid research laboratory . NRCO located on a hillock has created a very descent orchid garden . Several vareities of beautiful & esoteric Orchids can be viewed in this garden. The orchids in largish hot house are specially attractive. Scientists there are a hospitable & freindly lot.

I have read several articles in newspapers & magazines about Indian orchids, specially in North East. Surprisingly this place finds no mention.
