What If...
What If...
The most interesting country in the world has produced historians who are earnest, historians who are studious, historians who are dull. Let's get beyond their petty battles, to present history not as ideology, but as fun.
What If...
It is a very big 'What if?' and all I can do is to list how the ideals of the leaders might have been worked out, with advantage to all the people of South Asia...
What If...
The Partition was a tragedy, but the greater tragedy is that today the dream of a united India is the fantasy of the fanatics. I have been party to a fantasy of this sort myself...
What If...
Had he played his cards well, displayed organisational rigour and ideological flexibility, he may well have become the prime minister of India's first non-Congress government.
What If...
Would we have emerged as a religious-nationalist society? As India's first PM, Sardar Patel would have prompted more questions and provided few answers.
What If...
The Indian state might have become less a master and more a servant of the Indian people and the hierarchies in the society might have become less steep.
What If....
Ambedkar wrote: "I think good will come out of the death of Mr Gandhi. It will release people from bondage to supermen, it will make them think for themselves and compel them to stand on their own merits." Harsh words...
What If...
Try as I might, I can't think how India would have lost on any dimension if it had taken the right turn in the early '60s. India's destiny is to be a world power, alongside China and America.
What If....
At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world slept, south Indians saw a dream. They saw rising out of the void a new country 1,25,000 square miles in size with a population at that time of 60 million...
What If....
It would've accentuated India's very real internal social turmoil and to some extent robbed the freedom struggle of its powerful coherence...
What If....
Tibet would have been liberated; the loss of face would have made China retreat into its shell instead of becoming an aggressive imperialist....and of course India's Marxists would have been defanged.
What If....
Indira Gandhi might never have become prime minister. There would have been no question of her dominating the national scene for nearly two decades irrespective of whether she was in or out of power.
What If....
A theocratic constitution is a contradiction because that means some other law has precedence over the Constitution's sovereignty. Pakistan is a mirror enough of what a theocratic state can be.
What If....
We wouldn't have had a Hindu rate of growth. We wouldn't have had labels such as "socialist, secular" and "integrity of the nation". We wouldn't be fighting over privatising because much would have stayed private anyway...
What If....
The fallibility of the press, public servants and the judiciary would not have been proved. The timidity of Indian society would not have been exposed, nor moral hypocrisy been reinforced...
What If....
It would have removed one of the most potent causes of inter-community misgivings in India. India would have been a modern, democratic and truly secular republic.
What If....
Indira and Rajiv might still be alive. The Nehru-Gandhi dynasty might have been consigned to history, but it also could have survived and flourished just as it does under the current generation.
What If....
For starters, the population of India today, based on crude birth and death rates, would have been 610 million. But, them, Sachin Tendulkar would not have happened...
What If....
It wouldn't have made us a developed country by now. But from refusing-to-develop country (RDC) we would have moved to the willing-to-develop country (WDC) category.
What If...
Would Indira Gandhi not have been assassinated? Obviously there would have been no pogrom in 1984, but would India be very different today?
What If....
Fundamentally, his decision didn't alter the Ayodhya equation. But, then, his successors didn't continue his equitable and pragmatic Ayodhya policy.
What If....
What if the Mahabharat had been screened first? The ethical rather than the identity component of Hindu culture might have been foregrounded. Here were lessons for caste politics as well as for economic reformers.
What If....
What if Rajiv Gandhi hadn't given in to the bigots in the Shah Bano case? What if the Babri Masjid had not been unlocked by Rajiv Gandhi in 1986? What if Salman Rushdie's Satanic Verses had not been banned?
What if....
It would have brought about a disaster. Dalit representation in Indian politics would have been non-existent.
What If....
The Initial Public Offering of the Lok Sabha in early 2002 was the best tribute the nation could pay to the memory of its greatest reformer. For several years, Harshad Mehta had single-mindedly planned the IPOs...
What If....
Would Pakistan have still gone nuclear? Would Kargil have happened? Would there be an active campaign against nuclear weapons at work in South Asia?
What If....
Would Naroda Patiya have burned, would Ehsan Jafri have been killed, the Best Bakery been destroyed and Bilkis Bano been raped?
What If....
Easy. No generous R&R. India develops by stamping on the lives and rights of too many Indians. Too many of us remain ignorant of such stamping.
What If....
Psesudo-patriotism would have defined the flawed and short-lived Advani regime. He would have replicated Charan Singh, a man at ease with his petty prejudices, small ideas and intellectual banality.
What If...
At Lord's 1983, that is. Would cricket have emerged such a glamorous career option? Would mothers be hauling kids (and kits) to coaching camps across the country?...
What If....
For one half of the population life without 24-hour news channels would be unbearable, while for the rest it would not make an iota of difference.
What If....
What an option it might have been! A Sanskritised landscape! Taporis spouting Kalidasa...LS debates in devabhasha (Krama! Krama! Aham Somanatha Chattopadhyaya vadaami!...)
What If....
Excerpts from a May 10, 1986 interview: Last Monday, Satyajit Ray announced that he would step down as executive chairman of JWT...
What If....
Would Lata have attained the 'super' status she did if Noor Jehan (as the 'brighter' voice) had chosen to stay on in India after Partition? I took the point to Naushad...
What If....
What If Steve Jobs Had Stayed Back In Benares? What If AB Wasn't 'Inspector Vijay'? What If Amjad Khan Had Been Rejected For Gabbar's Role In Sholay? What if...
What Ifs....
What if, what if, what if, what if, what if, what if, what if, what if, what if, what if, what if, what if, what if, what if, what if, what if, what if...
What If...
What if there were no Kapoors in Bollywood, no ban on Satanic Verses, all PIOs returned home tomorrow, India were really to shine, there were no Marutis or trucks on the road and no butter chicken either?
