So Vande Mataram is once again in the news, with one of the 25 resolutions passed by Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind at its 30th general session in the presence of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, affirming that

"The [2006] fatwa of Darul Uloom (opposing recitation of Vande Mataram) is correct."

Here's a link to the full FAQ on the 2006 controversy, along with a link to the Congress Working Committee, in Calcutta on October 26, 1937, under the presidentship of Jawaharlal Nehru which provides a historical perspective.

And here's the full coverage from the Outlook Archives

While, the spirit of patriotism and love for motherland cannot be bound by a couple of stanzas or a song, the immense contribution of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhaya, whose song VANDE MATARAM towards liberating the servile Indians from the clutches of the COLONIAL rule cannot be overlooked. The only principle practiced by ISLAMISM worldwide is FANATICISM, which cannot be accepted in pluralistic society as a result they deprived of their power to appreciate the spirit and sentiments of other religion.

Pasha, its better u keep your views to yourself. Its not the BJP but the clerics who have created the whole dam thing.By asking Navin what you did , goes, its disgusting and reprehensible. Now that u have had your say,I need to ask you jerk ,why are your clan out here who breed like flies asked to change there faith or were they prevented from following it.Its despicable that after all the facts before the world u have the adorcity to make such parallels.People like u and those skull caps have done nothing to enlighten nor empower the illiterate clan, you guys are bent on making issues were none exsists. Why is that these clerics havent issued fatwas against those Muslims who have repeatedly failed the state and the religion. If at all u had any sense of rationale thinking you would never have made such a comparison.Nobody out here is asking people to convert but sing a song which is filled with patriotic fervour.Anyway i apologise to every Indian hurt by this insane blokes take.

It is not the Muslims, it is the BJP which wants to create issues out of nothing.
About a year or two ago, they made the people perform surya puja and sraswati puja in Madhya Pradesh.
Did any one ask you to become Muslim or behave like a Muslim in Muscat. ?

If welfare of Muslims and upholding the tenets of Islam is the prime concern of Ulama-e-Hind, then they should visit the Sultanate of Oman, a Islamic country, two thousand kilometers west of India and see for themselves the truthfulness of Islam. The country is an apt example of what Islam stands for. That means means clean living, being respectful to one and all, tolerant to other religions and diversity. One will be amazed at the freedom given to non-Muslims in their matters. But when i see the fatwas issued every now and then by the Indian Muslims clergy, I rue at their shortsightedness and complete ineptness at understanding Islam. The need of the hour for the Indian Muslims is not an advisory on whether to Sing Vande Maateram but to Shine in their respective fields and bring glory to themselves, the country they live in and ultimately to their religion.

What is the essence of this poem?
To show love , affection and devotion or worshipping the subcontinent of India?

If it is love and effection , Mulims love their parent , even if they are not Muslims.

But when it comes to worship, the concept of worship in Islam is differnt from other cults and religions.Muslims believe in one, unique, incomparable God, who has neither son nor partner. No one shares His divinity, or His attributes. In Islam there is no concept of incarnation, patron saint, presiding deity, guardian spirit ,Holy spirit or Holy Mother. No one has the right to be invoked, supplicated, prayed to, or shown any act of worship, but God alone.

He not only created us, but gave us a set of principles to guide us in the right path.
