Pratap Bhanu Mehta in the Indian Express: Sin of littleness

It will take a novelist with unusual insight to diagnose how structures of power can warp the sense of self of those who inhabit it, diminishing them at every turn. What else explains how quickly smart politicians, intrepid journalists, wise judges, serious academics, imaginative entrepreneurs are one by one revealing their feet of clay? What we are witnessing at the moment, across a range of institutions, is an elite bent on self-destruction: ideas have been replaced by vendettas, the future with past resentments, constructive engagement with rank cynicism. The words of Gandhi, that master analyst of Indian politics, are hauntingly appropriate: “Our besetting sin is not our differences, it is our littleness. We wrangle over words. We fight often for the shadow and lose the substance.”

...

The pessimism of the moment is not simply that decisions are not being taken or that reform is not happening. It is more serious and elusive at the same time. It is that it is hard for optimism to survive the bonfire of credibility that daily news has become.

It is not 'Sin of littleness',but it is the fear to call 'a spade a spade'that is the major drag on this country. There is tremendrous amount of artficiality in the country in every sphere of public life.Just to cite a few;nobody wants to say that there should not be a higher decision making position than that of the prime minister, like in the present arrangement of UPA chairperson.Nobody wants to criticise that crores of rupees are spent in providing security to an ordinary MP like Rahul Gandhi who has never ever opened his mouth in the Lok Sabha.Nobody wants to ask as to why judgement has still not come in Chidambaram's election case even after 3 years. The media and the government is damn scared to investigate the relation between the Maoists and the Church, despite the glaring example of Nepal. The murder of Swami Lakshmananda Saraswati by Evangelists is not even subject for discussion.Nobody wants to discuss the sexual abuse and even murder of nuns in Kerala Catholic seminaries. But,an insignifiant event like that of Swami Nityananda is discussed for days. The entire media is dominated by products from Christian institutions who are even ashamed to speak in any Indian language.Such big noise is being made against Team Anna bringing Manmohan Singh into coalgate,as if he is a saint despite his winning vote of confidence by buying the MPs.The list is too long to point fingers at unrealism in the country.
