After the pummelling at the hands of Australia, Sourav Ganguly says he agrees with the idea of bringing in new players but makes the important point that the selectors have often in the past only gone for soft targets - players whose omission may not create much furore in India:

By doing this, they not only save their backs but keep people happy. But now the time has come to make the right decisions. India's selection committee will be the centre of attention leading into the fourth Test. If they don't stand up and make the right calls, people around the world and India will start losing faith in Indian cricket.

The time has come for a statement. While the entire world talks about the IPL, rightly or wrongly, selectors will have to show that India's Test team matters. I know it does with selectors, but now actions have to prove it.

What will be the biggest test for the selectors will be fairness. There is talk of V.V.S. Laxman being dropped. If that's the case, the same rule should be applied to lot of other players as well. Laxman has been a terrific player but in sport, it's inevitable that your time will be up at some stage.

As a player, one only wants fairness from the selectors and that what is required for the side to go forward. Whoever is left out, young or old, equality has to be there and a proper message must be sent that puts a priority on performance.

Incidentally, this is how the three biggies have performed in this series so far:

VVS Laxman: 2, 1, 2, 66, 31, 0
R. Dravid:  68, 10, 5, 29, 9, 47
S.R. Tendulkar: 73, 32, 41, 80, 15, 8

But then if you look at their record only as recently as against England and West Indies (or just in the away England series), the story is quite different as Dravid was the most consistent player throughout 2011 and VVS after an indifferent series in England, scored 1, 58*, 176*, 32 and 31 against the West Indies

all 3 of sachin, dravid, laxman should have gracefully retired from tests once india reached number 1. That would have been some sort of glory. instead they chose to continue and are now unable to reconcile to the fact that they are in a position to be dropped and not go at the time of their choice. Sachin should have announced his retirement from international cricket after the world cup win which would have been fitting. instead shamelessly he is trying to cash in on the 100th 100 which is of no use or significance now when india has been thrashed and humiliated so badly abroad.

Yes! Sehwag should be the one that should be kept out of the Test Team first.

In the last 18 innnings only once India had got a 50 + runs partnership from the opening pair, with Sehwag & Gambhir being the pair for 8 times.

Sehwag should be rested, and other player should be brought in to test. later on remove Laxman, the backbone so far in the middle order and bring Sehwag in, if he proves he has got the patience and knows the way to play Test Cricket, or else provide the chance to other player.

One should remember that, it is Sehwag who plays the blinder and not Laxman who plays good test cricket.

Dada was forced to Quit and the Media had a role in it as well.Today the same is being done with VVS as well.

As much as VVS deserves to be dropped the same must be applied to Viru and Gambhir.

To be honest Tendulkar and Dravid have been tolerable ,but VVS has been pathetic.

There are 3 liabilities in the Indian team VVS,Viru and Gambhir.Just drop them.

This is what happens when you have a quota system and further "Quota within Quota' in composition of selection committee. Instead of Gas bag like Shrikant, bring somebody like Mohinder and Dilip.
