2011 was a glorious year for the Tamilians, what with Nobel winner Venky Ramakrishnan getting selected for Knighthood,Dhanush's Kolaveri Di becoming the number one song in the world,Ashwin becoming the spearhead in Indian bowling and so on.Yet such a gutter fellow like this Vasanthkumar wants to fall at the feet of that Italian woman Sonia. The only characterstic he has with Hanuman is that he is behaving like a monkey. He is comparing a woman of Sonia's calibre with Lord Rama.Imagine,if she had been compared with Mary or Mohamed, his head would have been chopped off.

TN politicians do physically prostrate before their leader. AIADMK members do this regularly. Some of them also brand the party name on their arms. Considering all that, this guy has miles to go before he sleeps :-)

This is Congress culture. If you think this is bad, then the entire Congress culture stinks.

Of course all sane people have always known this. But those with servile attitudes, along with jehadis and other anti-nationals have always flocked to the Congress.

I have never seen this kind of slave mentality in any country towards their national political leaders except India. @ Anwaar, please enlighten if you saw something like this elsewhere. This is no way inferior to slavery. BTW, it costs a bomb to issue such ads in the first page of a national daily, whose money is it anyway?

LOL.... look at the irony here. A few years back, this government submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court, which said that "there was no historical or scientific proof about the existence of Lord Ram or Ramsetu as a man-made bridge".

And now we have a member of the same party that headed the government (and whose ally famously questioned "who is Rama? is he an engineer?") quoting a conversation between Lord Ram and Hanuman to express his grovelling slavish loyalty.

Who said observing politics and politicians was not fun?

The Advertisement reasserts the Congress (I) Party Truth - Lick the feet of Madame - in a matter of fact way. This is the Congress (I) culture and people of this country have no problem as they still vote them in power (albeit with the allies).

Nothing special about being at somebody's feet. Usually politicians are waiting for a chance to pull somebody's leg. It is not uncommon to find detractors of a chief minister within the party waiting at the feet, if only to pull the chair at an appropriate moment. Don't be surprised if the very same Vasant Kumar changes it to "Madam J.Jayalalitaa's feet" tomorrow. Changing feet at the drop of a hat is no big feat for politicians. But 'Madams' should be careful not to get drawn into a game of Kabaddi.

This has more to do with the cultural aspect of South India. One can see Amma as incarnation of a Hindu godess or Karunanidhi as Hindu demi goad. Some months back, TOi ran an editorial where the author was mentioning P Chidambram bunting as Ganesha. This has to do with the Bhakti tradition of South India. One can see temples dedicated to actors in the South. The Bhakti tradition is devotion without apologies. This is certainly not an anomally

It is same like Anjaiah's sycophancy in 1980s. Even insulted by Rajiv publicly, he won't give up his obsequiousness. Lesser political but more a cultural phenomena.

Yes, Amma is Shakthi i.e. Power. Karunanidhi - treasure of kindness - is the dravidian atheist Brahma ... in the footsteps of Para Brahman E.V.Ramasawamy Naicker. This started me wondering, is there a tradition of branding as well? This looks more suited to cattle. (in fact, it probably was started to prevent defection to the DMK ;-) But, hey presto something called samAshrayaNam exists in the Shri Vaishnava tradition.  Bhakthi without apologies to Power, yes sir I understand that!

BTW, Vishnu did it too (prostrated) , to Bhrigu Maharshi.

in order to test Lord Vishnu, Maharishi reached Vaikunth Dham. He entered the Dham without Lord Vishnu's permission and saw that the Lord was resting at that time. Maharishi asked him to wake up, but Lord was in deep sleep. On seeing no reaction from Lord, Maharishi hit Lord Vishnu on his chest (that strike by Maharishi Bhrigu left a foot print on Lord's chest and that foot print is known as "Shri Vatsa").
Lord Vishnu got up after the strike and realized what has happened. On realizing that Maharishi had hit him with his foot, Lord asked him, “Maharishi, are you hurt in your foot? My chest is strong but your foot is not so strong". Seeing the decorum of Lord Vishnu, Bhrigu was pleased and declared him superior amongst the Tridev.

What is left out here is that, while Vishnu touhced his foot, he plucked out the divine eye of the Maharshi, with which Bhrigu could see all the 3 worlds and times.

The Bhakti tradition is a pan-India thing and not exclusive to the South of India. Were Kabir, Rahim, Surdas etc. South Indian? Mayawati's shoes were cleaned by one of her ministers. Are Mayawati and her minister South Indian? It is just that in the last few decades, this deification of film stars and politicians and sometimes, filmstars turned politicians has started in South India. No doubt it is a shame, but to link it with the Bhakti tradition is as spurious as it gets.

Bhakti tradition is for the South India what Roman Catholicism is for Vatican. One can always say Catholic is pan world religion. But everyone knows what Catholicism means in the Vatican.

Bhakti is different from other religious approaches Jnana and karma. Bhakti arose in South India and then spread to other parts of India. Bhakti tradition has a special place down South.

There is a temple dedicated to Amitabh Bacchan in Kolkatta. But this doesn't mean that there are temples for every actor in Kolkatta. Compared with South where some little know actors have temples.

we all know how much atheism is there in an atheist. Stalin opening churches after Nazi attack. The dravidian atheist Brahma,  Karunanidhi visiting temples after 2g case. Not every  atheist is a Nietzsche or Hitchens.

It is not right to put the whole blame on Bhakti tradition. Agreed.  It was not right to put the whole blame for antisemitismon on Nazism. It is a human trait to find the fall guys.

Bhakthi Tradition may have originated in South India, but was widespread in other places aswell - like Gujarat , Maha,Bengal (Meerabhai, Tulsidas,Chaitanya Mahaprabhu).

Also we dont find this sycophancy in Kerala, the state that saw the birth of Sankaracharya (who started the Bhakti era). Why?

Also we dont find this sycophancy in Gujarat - a state which can be considered as the bastion of Hindu conservative right. Why?

Rather than blaming religion, we need to see if this has to do with political tradition. The fault lies with India's longest ruling party  - Congress which has made this as an industry. Thus Congress through its various arms created a huge bhakthi cult for its leaders such as Nehru, Indira and Rajiv even though these leaders are wholly responsible for India doing so poorly relative to other countries on various fronts, espically HDI.

Advani recently remarked that a scandalous sum has been spent by successive congress governments in glorifying the Nehru-Indira-Rajiv pantheon. He is spot on. But we will never find any of the so called investigative and independent english media probing on this.

The ad is an example of enslaved mind done in bad taste. Slaves can only breed slaves. Bhakti is for self purification and an effort towards higher self and is too sacred to be misconstrued.  Shocking state of affairs of India is because of such poor quality politicians.

The Congress party is the biggest and worst example of how sycophancy and slavery is enforced and practiced. A single dynasty has held on to the reins of power directly or directly for over 60 years. No other party in India, even in the much reviled "South India" comes close. And the Congress traditional support base is mostly up there in North India. So to blame South India for this kind of shameful display of slavery is disingenous at best.
