Hooda calls UPA leaderless
Countering his detractors who want him sacked, Hooda has written a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi blaming the defeat on the Manmohan Singh government's mishandling of the Anna Hazare controversy. He has gone to the extent of calling the Central government leaderless and has named P. Chidambaram and Kapil Sibal as the men who aggravated the crisis '

Add BS Yeddyurappa, A Raja, S Kalmadi, V Ramaswami, Soumitra Sen and Nirmal Yadav. Secretariat to be headed by that IAS couple from MP. Lokpal to be made a self financing organisation (shouldn't be a problem) and not be a charge on the Consolidated Fund of India.
The lucky lot to get diverted away from their sins,,thanks to Anna breeze.Chidambaram for his role in 2G scam, and his fraud in getting elected.Kapil Sibal and his zero loss theory.Shiela Dixit and her crores.Mukherjee with his failure to control inflation.Ahmad Patel and his connection to Hassan Ali.The greater than P.C.Sorcar ,Rahul Gandhi to appear in Pune.Digvijaya Singh gaurding the Gandhi family assets.
UPA could have taken the sting out of Anna Hazare's campaign if only it had suggested that the Lokpal be chosen from the panel consisting of "K G Balakrishnan, P J Thomas, P D Dinakaran and Navin Chawla"
It is such un-statesmanlike comments of HM that should be avoided under all circumstances. While comic relief and HM's compliment to win friends by smiling benignly may be real politic, he can not afford to be lax even for a nano second. The Home Minister of a vast country like India carries a lot of weight, which should not be frittered away like this. Anna doesn't order the government to pass the Jan Lok Pal Bill. But the Lok Pal Bill should be no less strong than the Jan Lok Pal Bill. What objection can there be? The PM can commit grave acts of corruption and bring democracy to a "grinding halt". What was the Constitution (Thirty-Ninth )Amendment Act,? Fair law? Colourable exercise of authority of the parliament to enact laws? Something else? It is no case in a court of law. These are issues that demand political wisdom and Statesmanship.
How can the person protesting outside Tihar Jail, be against democracy? They love the idea of democracy, like I do. Democracy has many imperfections, as can be witnessed by the conduct of the parliamentarians. But, the idea of democracy is that the parliamentarian and the person outside parliament, are not one superior to the other. I understand, every vocation belongs to the practitioner, provided it is perceived so by the practitioner, but the vocation of politician makes the politician feel that parliament belongs to him/her, forgetting the fact that one needs to be elected to parliament, and the people are not anti-government, when they find faults in the functioning of the national executive, directed by the legislature. The question arises, is a democratically elected government, superior to the people it represents? In what manner are the people in government any less citizens of the democracy, as the democrats who are outside parliament?
The people who show support for Mr Hazare, are the middle class, who have a stake in India's democracy, according to themselves. Have any starving people of India, joined Mr Hazare in his agitation? I agree with the government, that the Jan-Lokpal Bill is far from perfect, that parliament needs to have authority over it's functions. But, is that authority evident now, today? I find it contemptible when I discover that the government assumes people like me are under the influence of some 'foreign hand'. The BJP says the same thing about the Congress, about Ms Sonia Gandhi, and I disagree and find that contemptible too. Mr Hazare may not be as erudite as Dr Manmohan Singh, but many parliamentarians, it can be admitted, have backgrounds defined as criminal, by the criminal justice code. It may also be assumed, that the culture of 'party politics', has facilitated this entry of certain people into parliament.
The political elements running the government, know how pernicious political parties are to real democracy. Do people like Mr Advani, Mr Chidambaram, Ms Sonia Gandhi, belong to India, or just to their constituencies? Further, it must be admitted, they represent India, more than their political parties. Where did the concept of Opposition, and Ruling Party come from? If there were no politicial parties, would there be any Opposition, and Ruling Party? Who does the Opposition oppose? Who does the Ruling Party oppose? I believe, each of them oppose the essence of Parliamentary Democracy, because parliament is divided.
Parliament is functioning, but what is the spirit of the letter of it's functioning? If parliamentarians can consult each other, then the whole of parliament is represented, when a bill is drafted, and passed.
If I told Mr Chidambaram that an official under him asked me for a bribe, and that my denial to pay a bribe caused me loss, then what action can Mr Chidambaram take to alleviate my loss, if he will take any action. These types of questions come not from any great intellect, nor from a man of ambition, but from a person who finds the work of the Indian Administration adding to his burden, not lessening it.
I heard the speech by Mr Chidambaram. I agree, that it is not the job of Hazareji to draft the Lokpal bill. But, the popular sentiment going around among the middle class, and the poor, and perhaps the rich, is that the Lokpal bill introduced, does not make the parliamentarian responsible for corruption. No person is perfect, if Mr Hazare was perfect, then he would not have had to oppose the Lokpal bill. But why should the imperfections in the running of parliament, in the running of the administration in general, not be accounted for? People are taking bribes in administration, and the parliamentarian makes speeches and drafts bills, which are not implemented by the administration in the first place. Which administrative service is implementing the laws passed by parliament? Mr Modi, the Chief Minister of Gujarat is not presiding over a corrupt government in Gujarat. Is it too much to ask the states, and the center not to do the impossible, which is exercise clean administration? Mr Chidambaram is intelligent, competent, erudite, and has many other qualities. But whose fault is it, that corruption thrives under the government. According to Mr Chidambaram, parliament is not responsible, and also, he does not say, that he is to blame. What exactly is the function of the administration of India?
Arun Jaitley's speech was excellent. Outlook should post the video of that.
The two rascals in the present government,Chidambaram and Kapil Sibal, and that scum called Digvijaya Singh, thought they had a great victory over Baba Ramdev and a repeat dose of the same medicine, albeit of a different colour would break Anna Hazare also.Sadly, and for the good of the country their scheme of things have totally gone awry. One prays to the honourable court handling Chidambaram's election fraud case to judgement at the earliest to send him to political dustbin..The zero loss fame Kapil Sibal should be made to lose his deposit by the voters of Chandni Chowk with a midterm election looming large. The next move of the Italian Congress party will be to send Rahul Gandhi to sit next to fasting Anna ,after his fill of pizzas and pastas. The bootlickers,Barkha and Rajdeep will beam this historic event for days.
I too would like to know the views of Vinod Mehta on this.
He was admittedly in favour of Anna from the beginning. But thought all eggs are in Govts kitty now, when five ministers pannel played a master stroke (dirty trick btw).
I knew he was wrong then comparing Ramdev and Anna same way.
I would like to know what does he think now?
I am hoping an interesting Outlook issue this week :)
The government tried to be clever and set the condition that he should not go back to the place of fast. Anna has refused to oblige.
The Hindu editorial has been very charitable - continuing to hide the fact that the leaders are mentally retarded morons since birth, by saying they are merely 'stupid'.
Did anyone see Saifuddin Soz in Times now? He turned out to be a bigger jackass than Manish Tiwai. I have never seen such a dunce politician.
Anna Hazare committed a blunder by not taking up the offer to release. He should have come out of jail, go straight to where ever he was supposed to hold the fast and continued the fast there.
Protesting inside jail is a strategic mistake.
Let us all remain cool and calm.Let us not fight with each other ---after all THEY are also one of us!. Let us agree that there is a need for a change in the political leadership and there is no one, repeat NO ONE in the Opposition is capable of assuming the mantle.
Therefore, like it or not, we have to reluctantly agree that it has to be within the Congress Party Combine---and THERE the best bet is is First Family members --SG,RG,PVG . For assuaging the opposition we should also bring in FVG.
Once this Team India has been set up, they can sit down with the Team Anna and thrash out the contents of the LokPal Bill quickly so that the Team India can get on with it work of governance --Desh(RG),Videsh(PVG),Sabhyata(FVG) with SG being overall in charge of these persons .
I think we need to take vote on this
The Hindu editorial is surprisingly good. Excellent in fact.
The Tehelka article posted by Vasu:
An excellent article for all:
":Delhi Police ultimatum to AnnaHazare: Fast for 3 days at JP Park or leave Delhi."
Fasts beyond 3 days should be considered criminal under the attempted suicide law.
>> It is the first duty of any government to protect itself and to not appear weak.
Actually, the first duty of any government is to serve the people and follow the constitution.
Govts that believe that their first duty is to protect itself, bribe MPs to stay in power.
"Those who believe Anna's movement is a "2nd freedom struggle" are delusional. A democratic govt which you don't like isn't a colonial ruler."- vdehejia
This is a fight against a disease which was left untreated either because we thought it was benign or because we thought it was untreatable.
""Make no mistake about it: the Congress will use any state power it can to protect itself and intimidate opponents." - Pratap Bhanu Mehta.
It is the first duty of any government to protect itself and to not appear weak. By arresting protesters one day and releasing them the next day because of public outcry, the government admits that it had erred. This may weaken it, or it may be seen as being rersponsive to public demand. The next few days will tell.
News: Hasan Ali granted bail by HC
News: Anna, Kiran Bedi, Kejriwal in Tihar Jail
Andher Nagri, Chowpat Raja. Take ser baaji, Take ser khaaja.
What is the significance of Independence day ?
That is the day the British handed over the baton to Congress. The nation is witnessing how it is being weilded today, on Aug 16.
The first thing to be done is to identify the POLICE MEN who arrested ANNA from the house where he was staying- when he had not violated 144 imposed by Delhi police. Get those Policemen. File case against these policemen from IPS man to Constable in "Supreme Court" to get them thrown out of their JOBS. It should be a lesson to all Govt officials who do everything at the "bidding of politicians", even when the orders infringe on the CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS.
where are JNU students...parasites on government money with no contribution to national economy..always protesting against USA, west, WTO..now when there is a cause at home..where are morons hiding?
>> @NAGARAJ -One should particularly notice that students from Catholic institutions and also the JNU have kept aloof from Anna Hazare movement. With the Catholic church very eager to see that Rahul Gandhi becomes the prime minister at the earliest, they cannot tolerate any movement that will have the potential to destabilise Sonia led UPA government.
May be,, May be not. Leave the religion out of discussion about corruption, accountability and Governance issue. Don't become Saba Naqvi or traitor Roy or Sagarika Ghost or Burkha Dutt or Tarun Tejpal or Teesta Setlvad or Dogvijay or Kapil L(S)ibel. These scums bring Hindus or hindutva or RSS or BJP into every convesration to divert the CORRUPTION of the DIE-nasty, SWISS BANK LOOT, BLACK MONEY, SCAMS, ABUSE OF AUTHORITY/GOVT. INSTITUTIONS. They make it COMMUNAL situation to poison the minds of Muslims or Christians. They bring in Muslin vs Hindu or Upper Caste vs BC or SC into every conversatio. They live on dividing people and continue to LOOT. If you start discussions on Muslims not participating or Christians not participating, this will only increase the gulf between communities. They will all join since we all suffer at the hands of CORRUPT MEDIA and POLITICIANS. We need to defeat DOVISIVE FORCES whether it is CON party or Bajrang Dal or Islamic Popular Front or DIEnasty or DogVijay or Burkha Dutt and focus on issues of Governance, Corruption and building better institutions.
Nice as it may sound, UNLESS the following issues are tackled head on, NOTHING WILL CHANGE WITH LOKPAL.
1. The JUDICIARY must be made accountable - time frames MUST be an integral part of justice. Merely keeping corrupt politicians till the net bail is not enough.
2. CAPITAL PUNISHMENT should be the new penalty for TAKING AND GIVING Bribes to LEADERS AND THE JUDICIARY. It must be treated as TREASON.
After all the struggle, Anna must not accept sops thrown at him by the COWARDLY AND USELESS Prime Minister.
Has anyone seen Vinod Mehta? I am very interested in his opinion about the survival skills of Manmohan Singh and how brilliantly the issue was handled.
Backed by the middle class, Anna Hazare will be victorious, says N.V.Subramanian.
15 August 2011: The Manmohan Singh government has seriously underestimated the appetite of the middle class for experimentation and change. It will persist with experimentation and change till the process ends in success or failure. That's what shows in the middle class's backing for its two previous heroes, V.P.Singh and Manmohan Singh, and is further indicated in its present endearment for Anna Hazare.
The UPA and its clever lawyers can do their damnedest to break Anna Hazare. But the middle class will ride him to glory till he achieves his mission. After which, if he is sensible and has a notion of history, which he has, Anna Hazare will fade away.
V.P.Singh was an unlikely middle class hero. Of his personal integrity, there was never any doubt like Manmohan Singh. But he was loyal to the Gandhis much as the PM is today. Even when he broke up with Rajiv Gandhi over the Bofors scandal, he kept a picture of Indira Gandhi in his office and worshipped her.
Why did the middle class go for this Gandhi loyalist? The middle class has always loathed the dynastic Gandhis, and would instinctively back any person against them. Circumstances turned V.P.Singh against Rajiv Gandhi, and his anti-corruption campaign appealed to the middle class. A wave generated in North India to back him.
What happened thereafter is well-known. Rajiv Gandhi trapped himself deeper and deeper in the Bofors morass, surrounding himself with opportunistic and worthless advisers. It is very reminiscent of how UPA-2 is painting itself into a corner in the 2G, CWG and other scams. Then V.P.Singh had a political veteran called Devi Lal as his ally alongwith the Left and Right.
The middle class ensured that V.P.Singh became PM. But when he took up the cause of Mandal reservations to counter Devi Lal & Co and to stay in power, the middle class split with him. When a youth during the anti-reservation stir immolated himself in Central Delhi, it ruptured the middle class from V.P.Singh. V.P.Singh had to go.
There are similarities between V.P.Singh and Manmohan Singh as observed in the earlier paragraphs. But Manmohan Singh came to power courtesy the Gandhis. The fine print to his prime-ministership said that he would vacate it when the Gandhi scion, Rahul, was ready to take over.
The middle class tolerated this arrangement beguiled by the fact that Manmohan Singh was a technocrat and honest. At least the dynasts were not directly in power. The middle class was on Manmohan Singh's side against the Left that opposed the Indo-US nuclear deal (the middle class has since realized how terrible the deal is). It backed him to a bigger victory in the 2009 election.
But when the middle class realized that Manmohan Singh was not about to change the order, that his personal honesty could co-exist perfectly and without qualms with the most corrupt government since Independence, relations between the two sides soured. Add to unbridled corruption runaway inflation, incompetence and a sense of impending doom -- and the middle class had had enough.
In April this year, Anna Hazare happened in Jantar Mantar. The middle class has swung to his support unconditionally. The middle class hates politicians. It was mislead to think Manmohan Singh was not a politician. In Anna Hazare, the middle class sees no politician but an upstanding war veteran who has only the good of the country at heart. His goodness and his idealism also move the youth, the biggest backers of Anna Hazare today.
So whatever happens tonight and tomorrow, Anna Hazare and the middle class will win. In the worst case that Anna and his team are arrested, it will still mean victory against the corrupt and venal UPA-2. In his Independence Day speech, Manmohan Singh said fasting would not remove corruption. In his cynicism and authoritarianism, he forgot that fasting and satyagraha won this country's Independence.
The second independence from corruption is not far. The UPA can employ all the executive hard power it has, but the game is over. Unlike V.P.Singh and Manmohan Singh, Anna Hazare is true to his cause. 'Thrice is he armed,' wrote Shakespeare, 'that hath his quarrel just.' The middle class is finally backing a winner who won't cheat it.
The battle is joined.
The heroes and villains have been marked out.
The Kauravas will lose.
Sundeep must be applauded for taking an independent stand-in contrast to his employers. Good work so far.
"Make no mistake about it: the Congress will use any state power it can to protect itself and intimidate opponents. "
ANother one of those morons with agenda to bring down the UPA govt. Bhanu Mehta has become a closet Sanghi as well.
This is a god fearing country. The blasphemy of incarcerating Anna in Tihar Jail alongside Raja, Kalmadi et al will not be lost on the country. The irony of it all tells a lot about team Manmohan !
why is the indian govt keen to instigate and provoke the public eveytime they try to protest peacefully???
The fast would have been peaceful by Anna and his supporters..but the govt and the police by arresting Anna and his team....are intentionally creating uproar in the crowd and provoking voilence .
ALL OVER INDIA THE PUBLIC IS PROVOKED BCOS OF THE MEASURES TAKEN BY THE POILCE AND THE INDIAN GOVT TO ARREST ANNA AND HIS TEAM.
One should particularly notice that students from Catholic institutions and also the JNU have kept aloof from Anna Hazare movement. With the Catholic church very eager to see that Rahul Gandhi becomes the prime minister at the earliest, they cannot tolerate any movement that will have the potential to destabilise Sonia led UPA government.During the freedom movement Muslims across the country never joined hands with the striving people, but kept aloof.History is repeating today, with students from Christian institutions, most of them Hindus, keeping away from Anna movement.
I see way many great people here are following their role-model Khuswant Singh of emergency fame.
We still appreciate JP.
I think LK Advani was wrong when he said, "they were asked to bend, they started crawling".
Reading the gyan above gives an idea that this is other way around actually.
Rather than they are being asked to "bend", they are asking themselves, "crawl me, crawl me .... plz"
How ironic is that, Anna was prevented entering a park named after JP.
