With a name like Obhishopto Nightie, you expect nothing short of a rip-roaring riot. The kind of laughter evoked by juxtaposing two of the unlikeliest bedfellows in the title—the shuddh Bengali term for ‘damned’ or ‘cursed’, and the somewhat frivolous moniker for a type of women’s nightwear—however, doesn’t really infect the rest of the film. Not that the concept or story lacks comic potential. A red, lacy, velvet maxi makes mysterious entries into the lives of women across Calcutta, turning them into temporary seductresses. It causes havoc in their personal lives, then is passed on to the next unsuspecting victim. So, when a bored housewife puts it on after finding it in a pile of laundry, freshly plucked from the clothes-line, and finds herself looking outside her marriage, she quickly gets rid of it. Finally, it lands in the lap of an aspiring actress, before the mystery of the cursed nightie is discovered. Birsa’s is a funny idea. Even clever, with elements of social satire. But the promise of the tongue-in-cheeks and the LOLs that the title makes wasn’t really fulfilled.
