In Full Bloom

Bloomsbury, the publishing house Harry Potter made, has set up shop in a crowded and buzzing Indian market. Their first big book will be Return of a King: The Battle for Afghanistan by William Dalrymple and later Manil Suri’s new novel The City of Devi (though their first book will be the staid but trusted Wisden Cricketer’s Almanac). This should be good news to the more literary writers from India as apart from the money-spinning J.K. Rowling, Bloomsbury has serious authors like Nadine Gordimer, Margaret Atwood and Howard Jacobson. The industry, however, is cut-throat here; Bloomsbury will be hoping its magic wand works.

Eat, Bat, Bowl

Cricket commentator and writer Boria Majumdar has come out with this curious book, Cooking on the Run. Boria loves home-cooked food when travelling abroad but is only an amateur cook. The book has funny anecdotes and simple recipes. Here’s one of ‘Broccoli Prawn’. Marinate 250 gms medium-sized prawns in salt and turmeric for two hours. Fry one chopped onion. Make batter of a tablespoon corn flour, a teaspoon soya sauce, a dash of pepper and salt. Dip the prawns in it, fry, keep aside. Add chopped broccoli to the oil and stir till soft. Mix the prawns, add the onions, add water, stir till the gravy is glutinous. Sprinkle coriander leaves and serve.

Arnie’s Back

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s muscular autobiography, Total Recall, glosses over his affair with his housemaid, which led to his wife of over two decades, Maria Shriver, to split from him. Heard at a literary gathering: what would the housemaid’s memoirs be called? Alien vs Predator.
