They didn't want a cushy corporate job. They had set their sights higher.

Just one year into business and his Bangalore-based KPO, i-runway.com, which works in the intellectual property space, is aiming for the sky. Started off with an initial investment of Rs 2 lakh, the company now is worth in excess of Rs 10 crore. "We work with 35 clients, including 4-5 international corporations worth more than $50 million each," says Animesh Kumar, co-founder and director, i-runway.com. "Frankly, it was the year at ISB that changed my perspective and gave me the right attitude to start up," says Kumar, who is only one among three brothers to become a businessman. "Sitting in the classroom with hundreds of people from other geographies and offices put my experiences in perspective. Hearing about the experience of one industry vis-a-vis other industries, I learnt that certain experiences have cross-industry applications," he adds.

Last month, the company raised a couple of million dollars through private equity funds—"they don't normally fund start-ups but did so in our case given our academic qualification and overseas experience and attitude". The other two partners in the company are Shashank Kabra, an IIT Bombay graduate, and Kunal Sharma of IIT Delhi. "In five years, we will be the number one in the IP space, like Infosys is in the IT space. In India we are growing through training. Just this month, we have been able to get a mobile commerce company as a client after a month's training, largely through education on why it is important to have patent registration." Aggressively hiring from IITs, i-runway is planning to double its staff strength from the existing 20 currently.
