As we tentatively get back to the Great India Story in times of global economic uncertainty, we don’t need more upsetting changes. Professionals are just about getting back into gear; pay hikes are, thankfully, back in fashion; and stories of hiring abound. Of course, memories of a topsy-turvy 2009 linger. So, please, let’s have some good news now, shall we? Well, the Outlook-MDRA ranking of the top professional colleges—in its fifth avatar—presents few surprises. Scan through these listings of the top professional colleges, and you will find many familiar names, the usual centres of excellence.

But is that necessarily a good thing? It’s quite evident that very few new names have waltzed into Outlook’s annual ranking. It’s a disturbing trend, suggesting a stasis in higher education. Sure, it takes some years for new entrants to establish themselves, but where are the challengers? Instead, we are left with the “bold and the beautiful”, institutes which know how to work the system, promise the moon, and, alas, fail to deliver. That’s what you get from an education system that is completely compromised, one in urgent need of fixing.

Our original plan was an ambitious one. In a first for any survey of top professional colleges, we decided to use objective data as the base to rank all nine professional streams. The response was good, but did not meet our expectations. Many institutes did not stick to the deadline, or sent incomplete data, forcing us to restrict that part of the survey to three streams: engineering, law and hotel management. For the remaining, we have used purely perceptual data to rank the top institutes. Next year, we plan to get more institutes to participate in this exercise.

Hopefully, the planned recast of higher education will help clear the haze around the quality of institutes, brought out in our story on the scam that goes on in the name of accreditation. It’s a challenging task, but one that must be undertaken to protect the rights of students. As our extract of TeamLease’s labour report highlights, there is a grave danger that India’s so-called “demographic dividend” will turn into a nightmare. The flashpoints are already evident in large swathes of our country. We would be foolish to ignore them. As for students, these are periods of uncertainty for higher education. As always, choose wisely.

When BITS Pilani comes with flying colours in ranking, a sense of pride can be measured in all those who passed out from there. BITS Pilani has always been well known for its stand on merit only policy and every parent felt proud when it is thundered by the officials during freshmen welcome that there is no quota of any kind to anyone. The instance of KK Birla refusing admission for candidate referred by the all powerful Indira Gandhi and other ministers has been quoted time and again. Even when the nation was boiling with the implementation of reservation policy on caste lines by Arjun Singh, BITS had taken a bold stand and opposed it stating that merit can not be compromised under any circumstances. However, what is not told is the fact that BITS Pilani has been giving direct admissions to children of BITS Staff as well as BET (Birla Education Trust) staff and to toppers of Birla schools in Pilani. This has been going on for past two decades and what is there to say when BITS vice chancellor children and present directors of its various campuses, deputy directors etc have all been beneficiaries of this direct admission scheme. Those who have spoken against this type of admissions have been sidelined and have left BITS. To attract large number of students for enrollment, the Birla School Pilani in Dec 2009 went to the extent of openly advertising that Sizeable Number of seats available against Management Quota for admission to BITS Pilani. Its time BITS Pilani comes out clean on this Staff Quota School Quota and disclose the sizeable number also.

@Camelpost
Just to clarify, whatever seats that are reserved for toppers of Birla schools and staff members, are not engineering, or for that matter, even sciences seats. These students are offered only a course called General Studies. If they want to take up sciences or engineering, they have to go through the same procedure as all others. BITS does have a reservation for board toppers and that is hardly non-merit based. Enlighten me if I am wrong.

I totally agree with Harshit. The reservation is only for the LOWEST course on Campus. i.e. General Studies. How low it is can be shown by the following Example. If any meritorious student performs very bad for consecutive semesters, he is forwarded to ACB (Academic Counselling Board), and even if his/her studies don't improve, his/her degree is changed to General Studies. I hope you get the level of General Studies on campus now. So no matter how many children get direct admission to that degree, if they want to get a better degree, they have to compete with other meritorious students. Same is the case with Birla Public School students. Toppers of various Boards are however given the best options because (i feel.. :P), they deserve it after topping their board.

While boys fare poorly in schools today, the anti-male government pretends that this is somehow 'natural', instead of finding ways to redress this phenomenon.

Harshit and Abhisek Rathi do you think Birla School Pilani advertised stating Sizeable Number of Seats available against Management quota for BITS Pilani General Studies programme. You can call the school and ask Tel 01596-242113,244308,09829227051, 09587809991, 09602213474. RTI has empowered you to get what you want from where you want. Hope you are enlightened now.

Myself, being from Pilani itself and a BITSIAN too, knows very well that how fair it is in the admissions process. It is true that for so many years it has been offering direct admissions to the children of its staff members, but now this thing has slowed down. One has to crack BITSAT in order to get an admission. The entire academic course structure is excellent and provides for the overall development of the student.I can say that BITS Pilani is an overly enhanced version of Birla Senior Secondary School,of which I have been a student too.

It's VERY VERY GREAT that the institute has maintained it's reputation and leading it's way to excellence where a large number of Government run and privately run institutes are coming every year.

And all my fellow colleagues well know that ONCE A BITSIAN , ALWAYS A BITSIAN.

Dear Sunil Kumar Sharma the point is Direct Admissions candidtaes need not take up BITSAT. Since MSc(Tech) Information Systems (IS) is not listed as a professional degree, direct admission candidates can do dual in that and many direct admissions have done that also. What good reason why MSc(Tech)IS degree is not considered professional?

@ CAMELPOST

What are you trying to prove over here? I will give you some numbers that will hopefully clear your paranoia about the selection procedure in BITS! First of there are exactly 27 direct admission cases including the faculty quota as well as the quota for top students from the Birla Schools of Pilani (The latter being branded as Management Quota by Birla School, Pilani, I agree is disgracing, but it has got nothing to do with money squandering). As you are in doubt whether this "Management Quota" might involve some dubious activity, rest assured cause I being a first yearite BITSian know those people who came in through this quota. Around 5 are from Faculty Quota and the rest are toppers from the Birla Schools in Pilani.

These people during admission get only M.Sc(Hons) (not Tech) in basic sciences, with restrictions that they can't have vertical transfers to, or a dual in any engg degree. But they can get a dual with M.Sc(Tech) degrees like Info Sys, Finance. But that requires them to have a really high CGPA (more than 9) to get Info Sys. This year there are only two such guys (from this quota) and they will get InfoSys. For Finance they need some 8+ and there's only one.
And its pretty much the same numbers every year, so u see, you really don't need to doubt the credibility.

And why are you doing this CTRL+C, then CTRL+V everywhere with college rankings, any grudge that you have?

And Joka right? Anything to do with IIM? Don't Worry, I am fellow Bong!

A BITSian.

@ Parvez Alam Thanks for bringing out the fact in open that there is a staff quota and school quota. Before BITSAT when normalized percentages were used for admissions, the "Direct Admission kids" got into BITS even if they had just 75% normalized aggregate when open candidates with over 95% could not get the MSc(Hons)admissions.

Remember that BITS had opposed reservation based on caste criterion saying that its a compromise on merit. Then why this compromise on what the Birla School openly branded as Management Quota. Do you think that the CGPAs for giving dual degree for "Direct Admission" are "fixed"? It must be varying from year to year and there should be no doubt on that. There must be some years when CGPA went down from previous year for awarding dual degree to some 'Deserving' Direct Admission cases.

Search your conscience to find out why the highly sought after and undoubtedly professional degree MSc(Tech) Information Systems is not listed as a Professional program along with BE(Hons)?

In today's context, do you think the Direct Admissions criteria of normalized aggregate 75% and no need for BITSAT as correct? Why has it remained at 75% for two decades? Remember that someone with aggregate 79.99% and BITSAT score of over 400 can not get admission to BITS as 80% aggregate is specified minimum.

As long as the direct admissions is for MSc(Tech) General Studies no one is questioning that as there are no takers for it as such.

Is it necessary that everyone from Joka must have to do with IIM and be a fellow Bong? I am just a simpleton who shook your conscience to the extent that you did not do CTRL+D to the issue!

I dont know what you want to prove here!!
The point is BITS does not has reservation based on caste etc and nor does it discriminate in a similar way like in the IITs. And regarding the Information Systems course in Pilani they have a different curriculum altogether than the BE ones and it need not be listed as profsnl at least u wont say dat if u see d placements of dat branch nd its recognitn. And yes everyone in Pilani dont get into Pilani. From near about more than 500 students who pass out each year only 5 are selected. And they need not be from Pilani as students come from all over India come there to study in these schools (read Kerala also).

Very nice logic Abhilash. If students from all over India including God's own country Kerala come and study in Birla School Pilani, does it entitle the school to have sizeable number of seats against management quota for admission to BITS Pilani? In your opinion, it seems the students from Birla Schools pilani are a separate caste by themselves as compared to students who study in non birla Schools in and not in Pilani.
