Basava Premananda
(1930-2009)
Tribute
The Spell Breaker
A leading Indian sceptic and guru-buster bows out
India’s so-called ‘godmen’—and one in particular—must have heaved a sigh of relief on October 4. That Sunday, Basava Premanand, a man who had hounded them mercilessly for decades, exposing their ‘miracles’ as cheap sleight-of-hand tricks, was finally silent, felled by a cancer diagnosed three years ago. True to his noble calling, he reaffirmed his rationalism and atheism right to the end, donating his body to the medical college in Podanur, Tamil Nadu, where he had lived most of his life.

Just before his death, he told his followers, “Don’t ever give up some activity to see my body.” His successor, Narendra Nayak, who was to conduct a workshop in Bhubaneshwar an hour after Premanand passed away, continued his programme, albeit with a heavy heart. For Premanand, as with Mahatma Gandhi, ‘Work was worship, worship was not work’. Whatever property and assets he had, Premanand left to the Federation of Indian Rationalists Association, particularly his 26 books and their copyright.

Born to a theosophist couple in Kozhikode, Premanand was strongly influenced by Madame Blavastsky’s teachings in his early years. He had no formal education, but devoured religious texts as a teenager, reading the Gita, Koran and Bible. A keen observer of the paranormal, he sought out swamis and gurus to gain their spiritual insights. He found they were all fakes, fooling their followers and making money in the bargain.

A major turning point in his life was his 1969 meeting with the Sri Lankan rationalist, Dr Abraham Kovoor, while Kovoor was on a ‘Miracle Exposure’ lecture tour in India. They were kindred souls and Kovoor saw in Premanand his successor, which he duly became on the former’s death in 1978. However, before he died, Kovoor had struck some telling blows against spiritual fraudsters. He undertook extensive tours of the country to demonstrate exactly how our ‘godmen’ performed their ‘miracles’.

Kovoor’s particular target was the fuzzy-haired Sai Baba of Puttaparthi, whose millions of gullible followers include cricketer Sunil Gavaskar and the late constitutional expert, Nani Palkhivala. Kovoor took on Sai Baba’s famous claim that he had ‘materialised’ a Seiko watch, the only specimen of which lay in a Tokyo vault, before the Japanese head of the company. Kovoor wrote to Seiko and found that nobody from the company had visited Sai Baba and no such specimen watch existed in a Tokyo vault. The story had been cooked up by one of Sai Baba’s advisors! He published his findings. There was no response from the Sai Baba camp.

Kovoor also challenged astrologers, palmists, sundry babas and their ilk to prove their psychic and miraculous powers ‘under fraud-proof conditions’ and win Rs 1 lakh. Needless to say, nobody took up the challenge.

Premanand continued Kovoor’s challenge. On one occasion, a swami who claimed he could walk on water, decided to try his luck. Supported by R.K. (Rusi) Karanjia’s popular weekly, Blitz, an elaborate stage and water tank was set up and thousands turned up to witness the ‘miraculous walk on water’. As the cameras rolled, the swami sank like a stone as he stepped on the water but not before Blitz had raked in lakhs in ad revenue!

Premanand, too, took on Sai Baba. Since the Baba claimed to materialise objects made of gold ‘from the air’, Premanand filed a writ petition against him in the Andhra Pradesh high court, under Section 11 of the Gold Control Act, which mandates permission from the gold control administrator for manufacturing gold! Of course, nothing came of the writ petition, given Sai Baba’s enormous political clout. At a more serious level, Premanand investigated the murder of six inmates of Sai Baba’s ashram on June 6, 1993, which he published in a 800-page book, Murders in Sai Baba’s Bedroom. Despite the damning findings by Premanand, nothing came of the shocking incident.

For over two decades, Premanand published a monthly magazine, The Indian Sceptic, dedicated to spreading rationalism and scientific temperament. He lectured in over 7,000 villages and towns and his popular book, Science Versus Miracles, gave explanations for 150 ‘miracles’.

One of our great failings is our gullibility and how prone we are to superstition. More than any other nation perhaps, we are taken in by a whole host of outlandish swamis, gurus, yogis, babas, acharyas, astrologers, palmists and the like. Sadly, even though they have repeatedly been exposed as fraudsters, they continue to flourish and determine much of our lives. We need more Abraham Kovoors and Basava Premanands to steer us on the rational and scientific track.

Ganpathi: "kerala and tamilnadu where the power is alternating between rational political formations"

"rational" would be an oxymoron when associated with ANY tamil politician. Especially those that claim to be so.

GANAPATHI <<<<

I don't know , you could have been felt happy if I had written that Vivekananda met some scheduled caste fellow.

But what can I do?

I wrote about his lecture, exactly as I read it, a few years ago.
I cheked it again (thanks, that what I remebered it is correct) and now I have pasted it for your reference and others who may have doubts as much as yours.

Once you do the cut and paste of http address I gave , you may have to click the first address in the search result (google.com).
Good luck.

there r societies which beleive earth is flat
if u beleive one like that without questioning u also beleive that untouchability has divine sanction/widows should shave their head or undergo sati/ladies should not study after attaining age and intercaste marriages should be prevented by honour killings.kindly read the newspaper to see how many couples r murdered for same gothra marriages evry day in the north to realise the stupidity of ur argument.
a rationalist can tolerate a devout wife/husband/son/daughter but not viceversa.the percentage of beleivers in developed countries like norway/denmark/sweden etc is quite less and its only the highly religious pak/bangla/afghan/iraq/nepal which r reeling at the bottom of all development indices.russia was able to raise very fast after being splintered and coldshouldered by the developed nations due to the high presence of nonbeleivers.its kerala and tamilnadu where the power is alternating between rational political formations the development indexes r better.

dear srinivasalu the death rate is going down rapidly because people started questioning religion/miracles/godmen and developed knowledge. the basis of anatomy written by gray was done by hiring theives to get bodies from burial grounds and dissecting them in a underground room.no religious man can ever do that and u see the kesris and manmohan undergoing umpteen bypass/angio and doing well. no godmen or religion has prevented millions dying due to plague/cholera(it was called as gods curse and was named after god)but the rational thinking doctors who didnt pray and wait for miracles. insulin was discovered after he lost his girl friend to diabates and it has saved millions.can any godmen deliver a child which is in cross presenation (shoulder)without caesarean.the number of women dying of pregnancy during the glorious days of hinduism/christianity/islam etc was 100 times the current number. read about the few indian origin nobel winners and u will be surprised to see most atheists and care a hoot for any religion.
the miracles of bowenpally and vivekananda(why only brahmins do miracles dear friend when it comes to vivekananda)was a good comical break in the sadness due to the death of basava.

It is said that an atheist is on the other side of God. Which means an atheist is very much near to God like a shadow.
Swami Vivekananda says that "for every fake thing, there must be an original" he said this in the context of miracles.
He gave lecture on the "Power of Mind" in USA.
(Power of Mind is a part of "complete works of swami Vivekananda" available in print)
In this he speaks about miracles.
He gave an example from his own experience in Hyderabad. At the time he was not known, he had not yet become Swami Vivekananda.
He had a chance encounter with a Brahmin gentleman who was wearing just a thin towel (angosthram).
Swami Vivekananda enquires about his miracles. The man instead asked Vivekananda to out his(Vivekananda) hand on his head, since he believed that if great saint put their hand on the head, fevers etc. will come down and he was at the time, suffering from fever.
The next day, Vivekananda went there along with a few friends. Vivekananda stayed in Hyderabad as a guest at a land lord’s house.
First Vivekananda dragged the poor, impoverished Brahmin by hand to a corner of the room, there; Vivekananda covered him in a blanket and wound it , very tightly so that thin, bony, Brahmin fellow could not even moved his hands.
Then he asked him to produce things from air.
That poor fellow produced a bunch of grapes in front of him. When Vivekananda asked, he produced fruits; those do not exist in that season.
He finally produced a bunch of very rare rose flowers, including their dew drops in tact.

Swamiji says in that lecture that, he produced so many fruits etc., that their weight was double the weight of the man, the Brahmin who produced it. He was still wearing that same, thin, white towel around his lions. That fellow ate some fruits, he produced!!

I advise people, to read the lecture "Power of the Mind" by Swami Vivekananda.
There are three incidents, he recounted, including the one at Chidambaram, where a Brahmin wrote on a piece of paper , whatever Swamiji' spoke, much before Swamiji actually spoke those words. Every time he writes them, he would fold the paper, asked Vivekananda to keep it in his pocket.
After Vivekananda spoke those same words he would ask him to open the paper and read it.

I had personally seen only one miracle,
but I somehow do not give much importance to miracles because that is not a qualifying factor, for spiritually developed person.
One day I went to a Sadhu near the Shiva temple, he lived there at the time. That Sadhu smokes a lot. Wears a single piece of yellow cloth to cover his genitals and thighs. He smokes and spits all over in front of him
I observed that whenever I went and sat beside him, my mind became very calm, peace simply descended on me. I was in a very bad situation at the time, so that was great relief.

First I brushed away, that peaceful feelings and could not like that Sadhu because, he was uneducated, and always speaking very abusive language. I never paid any respects to him.
But he always used to look at me with kindness and loving looks. I became so addicted that instead of sitting in the temple, I used to get out of the temple quickly and sit beside him. The moment I sit ,my mind would become very peaceful and quit.

On Shivaratri day, in a terrible rush so many people were also touching his feat. He won’t bother to look at these people; many times he would be smoking and spitting aside. In that rush my mother touched his feet, immediately, he shouted in that rush, you are "gopal's mother!!" The point is I do not have much resemblance to my mother, and he had never seen my mother.

Patanjali Yogashastra says that a siddhi Yogi can produce, can materialise any thing in front of him, that MUST be located somewhere.
If Sai Baba produced a gold chain from nowhere (I had seen a video recording and it was perfect, it came from air) but since it must be located elsewhere, it can mean, he is a thief or that he had purchased with cash and kept them in a place.

A spiritual person need not show any miracles.
They can be known by peace and quietness they can bring to you without even talking to you. They can bring courage or confidence in you.
They can obstruct, or divert any harmful incidents those may happen to you in your future life.

I have nothing against atheism but atheism should not be based on ignorance.
Charvaka argued against the existence of God but he accepted karma.
Jaina Vardhaman Mahavira was an atheist but he preached that the “self”
,atman exists. You have to emerge from the cycle of bondage called repeated births , said Mahavira , meditating on the “atman” (soul) and freeing it from karma is important, there is no super soul, no God, no heaven , no hell , nothing.
Every time you kill some “life” for your purpose , you are adding to the bondage of karma.

There are societies which believe earth is flat and I dont know of any harm done by them to the society at large. People like Kovoor or Premanand can count books and articles written by them, but I have not heard of any single person or family bailed out of misery by their like. Whether Saibaba is fraudster or not had never been the question in my mind and either way I would have cared two hoots; but certainly his followers are axemplary citizens and his Aashram and charity have benefited thousands of people of all religions (athiests / rationalists included). His teachings may sound Hindu in context but He advocates respect to and equality of all religeous faiths. His messages are inclusive of essentials of all religions in content. I prefer him even as a fraudster over the non-fraudster atheists / rationalists. The issue is not being or being a fraudster per se; the issue is what difference did you make to the rest of the world either by being a fraudster or by being a rationalist.

dear vijay.russel wrote why i am not a christian and was an hardcore rationalist.can we ask him why he didnt write why i am not a hindu/muslim/buddhist/parsi etc.hindus are the majority in india and hence most of the reformists will target it.for ur information taslima nasreen was targettted in hyderabad when she came to attend a meeting organised by rationalists association to felicitate her.its ur sanghi mindset which specifically feels compassion for taslima while targetting kancha ilaiah.
the india of today is far better than in what it was 100 yrs ago and the role of nonbeleivers is a main reason for it.no religion was able to cure any diseases and most of the inventions which helped mankind are from atheists. most of indian nobel laureates are too atheists and care a foot for any religion.

ANWAR,

As long as there are the believers of god so long will there be Godmen..A few god men who had their own vested interests may have spoiled the name and good work done by of many amongst those Swamis/godmen.But why pick up the Hindu godmen alone.doest it mean that only Hindu godmen are bad.why not those from the christian and the Muslim communities are not raised.Have we heard less about them.
An atheist or a communist can have view against any swami. But he hardly talked about the godmen from other communities. The are some Muslim godmen who are capable of brainwashing and motivating jihadi mindset and set them off as Fidayeens or human suicide bombers. There are Vatican funded missionaries who in the name of the god are converting the poor and gullible using the charity money collected from the followers. Is Saudi Arabian regimenot funding such religious groups. For Pakistan more than any other nation it has become a luctative business of providing training and arming religion into humans.

> " More than any other nation perhaps, we are taken in by a whole host of outlandish swamis, gurus, yogis, babas, acharyas, astrologers, palmists and the like."

Indian swamihood, when mixed with American commercialism, can become a highly lucrative enterprise. No wonder we have so many of them.

His passing away is a sad loss to India and the world. The Rationalist Association of India should continue to his work with increased vigour. It is surprising that while so much is written about the ashes and watches materializing from nowhere we have educated people flocking them. One man called these kind of people literate illiterates-Osho. It is a pity that in the land of Buddha such charlatans flourish.

Basava Premanand and Dr kavoor also belong to a category called "Jahil" or "idiots".

"Rationalist Association of India" is a name that i have heard first time in 38 years of my life. What they have done for India or in Sri Lanka?

Rational people are spawned by them??

These are a few reactionary group, who by birth have popularity in their mind.

Life is much more complex and coming out of BLUE is much localized context specific. People have found way to be out of difficult situation of life then just being called "Depressed", "Manic" and eating some medicines which definitely does not make healthy again.

Modern sciences approach to psycic and emotional disorder is more fraudulent then these unscientific approaches.

Rationlists should first learn their own and area of applicability.

Humans claiming to do silly things cannot and must not be taken seriously.
Just as Ramalinga Raju, Harshad Mehta and Wall Street and Madoff have been stripped of their God like status and yet million other financial fraudsters continue, the so called spiritual field is full of chaps , almost Chaplinesque in their absurd claims, who continue to feed the hunger in people for a power beyond their own.

Governments and courts are flawed beyond measure and the subject of much need for reform.

Cheers to Premanand who chose to question the defilement of sacred space by fraud gurus.
