10 Questions
Sister Jesme
The former nun exposes the dark face of the church in Amen: An Autobiography of a Nun
John Mary Interviews Sister Jesme
What provoked your break with the convent?

Convent authorities branded me a mental patient and tried to take me to a psychiatrist. So I'm trying to prove to the world I'm alright.

What did you have in mind when you wrote about the chance sexual encounters?

Wanted to be true to myself and my readers. Let the world know what's happening within the four walls. It's not what one expects.

Should priests and nuns give up celibacy?

Celibacy is laudable but very difficult. Let priests and nuns have the freedom to marry.

Isn't there an ombudsman-type authority to look into complaints by nuns?

Every three years we elect superiors. But it's a sham. I was once a member of the electoral college so I know what it is.

The worst form of exploitation in convents?

Making you do unwanted things in the name of blind obedience because we have taken the vow of obedience.

Is there parental coercion behind girls enrolling in convents?

Not much. But from childhood, we are brainwashed into believing that becoming a priest or nun is the best that one can aspire for.

How safe are you after leaving the convent?

Jesus protects. In houses I've stayed after leaving my order, the Congregation of the Mother of Carmel people have been protective. The church has perhaps decided to leave me alone.

Can sublimating yourself as the bride of Jesus substitute for a real-life partner?

When one's heart is filled with Jesus, one doesn't need a human partner. Spiritual bliss is far superior to that of physical ecstasy.

What ails Christian institutions?

Those who want to misuse the church can go to any extent. Lust for money breeds all other forms of lust for which you will even kill, as evident in the case of Sister Abhaya (allegedly murdered for witnessing sex in a convent).

What next?

To set up a shelter for women and provide food, clothing, and peace. Amen!

COERCION is not a good sign of civilization and evolution for human beings - be it at Convents, Ashrams, Madrassas or Vaticans.

The revelation of Sister Jesme is an example that double-standard, hypocrisy, and pretention exists at every level, strata, and belief.

COB, men evolved from animals, who will be logically closer with animals than god.

Vatican is the oldest criminal organization. They should start setting their own house in order before pointing out the evils of Indian society to lure hindus into Christianity.

That being said Sexual exploitation happens even in hindu ashrams and it needs to be condemned. The only way sexual crimes can be stopped in India is to punish it with death sentence.

J_M:>>"Can sublimating yourself as the bride of Jesus substitute for a real-life partner?"

the question itself, implying 'the deva-daasi' concept, despised among hindus [ by chr and also moslems, who also, themselves, marry some dtrs to quran] is an insult to jesus christ, who, in my perception, was given sanyaasa-deekshaa in tibet by aadi-Sankara. himself. It is not correct to expect all priests and nuns to be sanyasis and sanyasinis. It is also not correct to bury all christians on death, like it was done for jesus.

Only sanyasis, in whom nirvilkalpa-sama-aadi, the begin of matter-spirit unification to become part of the Absolute, could possibly have started, should be given burials in samaadis and also worshipped by devouts later as saints, sufis in union with God.

I am entirely in agreement with Mr CP Narendran. OUTLOOK which is super-critical of Mangalore incident is treating the "Sister Jesme" reported Church incident with "kid glow" when what has been happening in the "monasteries" as stated by Sister Jesme is violation of "women's right" and "exploitation of women" far in excess of what happened in Mangalore. Why is the "Women's Rights Group" inactive??? Why is the "Lal Chadhi brigade" not sending "White Chadhis" to the Bishops and Pope???

It appears you are new to this forum and therefore knocked at the wrong door for the information you seek. Perhaps you may not know that in the Indian ‘secular’ media it is considered taboo to publish anything touching on Christian shenanigans. What we are allowed to read in them about Christianity are pious stories of its message of love, charity, service to the poor etc and terrible stories about nuns both young and those reached menopause being raped, and their murder in cold blood. Those books which do not get included in the Vatican Index of prohibited category and the news about Christians in the Indian secular media are on par when it comes to questions about what we ought or ought not to read about Christianity..

I am sure like most other Indians the story that it is possible even for nuns and priests to behave like normal healthy human beings given the opportunity must have come as a great surprise to those in this forum also. In that situation, how it is possible for them even to imagine that a Christian nun can produce a book on such events in monastic life?

The story in Outlook about the Christian nun comes under the category of, what may be termed as, ‘reluctant journalism’ because it dares not publish the full story giving all its back ground unlike when it covers Muthalicks with opinions of half a dozen ‘secular independent’ observers.

Try Penguin,India, they are publishers of the English version

I am so looking forward to this book. Will it be available in the United States? If not, where may I order a copy?
