Encounter In Delhi
Delhi Police lose their highly decorated Inspector but claim breakthrough in the serial blast case: two alleged terrorists killed in a fierce encounter in Jamia Nagar of south Delhi.
Close Encounter
It was just another day in the life of Police Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, the ace shooter of Delhi Police's elite anti-terror squad. It began with a visit to a hospital to see his son who is down with Dengue.

I call it media circus because that's what I think this morning's so-called encounter killing of two young people referred to as "terrorists" in L-18 Batla House, Jamia Nagar, by the Delhi police really is, like many more such incidents.
Yousuf Saeed
Two suspected terrorists were killed, one arrested, and two escaped, while one highly decorated Delhi police Inspector was killed and another injured, in a fierce encounter in Jamia Nagar of South Delhi today.

Delhi Police said five suspected terrorists, holed up inside House No L-18, Batala House in Jamia Nagar, near Khalilullah mosque, exchanged heavy fire with the police team that tried to enter the house for investigations.

The encounter that began at about 11 am in the morning lasted almost an hour.

Delhi Police Special Cell Joint Commissioner Karnail Singh later confirmed that there were a total of five suspected terrorist at L-18. Two were shot dead and one arrested while two managed to escape.

Five residents of Jamia Nagar have been detained for questioning, though it has not been established if the two who escaped from the encounter spot have been arrested yet.

The owner of the house where the five militants were holed up has been detained along with four others of the locality, a senior police official said.

The two killed alleged terrorists have been identified as Atiq alias Bashar and Faqruddin (also identified as Sajid in some accounts), who, the police claim, were members of the proscribed Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islamia as well as banned SIMI. The police claim that they hailed from Azamgarh in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Atiq played a "key role" in the blasts in Delhi as well as in Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Bangalore, Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal told reporters in a press conference.

The militant, arrested after being injured in the operation, was identified as Saif. He has been admitted to hospital. Police suspect that the militants were planning to carry out more terror strikes in the national capital besides targeting some VIPs.

Earlier, around 150 police personnel were deputed in the predominantly Muslim Jamia Nagar area to assist the Special Cell in the operation. They had cordoned off the area, which is why there is some confusion as to how two of the five alleged terrorists could escape from the area. The encounter began at 0900 hours when the police got a tip off about the presence of militants in the third floor of a house near Batla House.

Interestingly, home minister Shivraj Patil was reported to have remained at the Police headquarters while the encounter lasted whereas the minister for state for home, Sriprakash Jaiswal told a TV channel that he had no information about the encounter and knew what he did from TV channels which, apparently, he had been monitoring very closely.

Erroneous Reporting

It had earlier been erroneously reported by various TV news channels that the police were working on the information from the prime suspect in the Ahmedabad serial blasts, Abu Bashar, who had identified the four-storied house near a mosque in Jamia Nagar as the one where he, along with Delhi serial blasts mastermind Md Subhan Qureshi, had taken shelter in July.

Bashar, who was brought to Delhi recently from Ahmedabad for questioning after last week's serial blasts in Delhi that claimed 24 lives, was said to have identified four places - two in North West District and one in South District - where some terrorists could still be hiding.

Delhi police commissioner Dadwal later "categorically denied" that the encounter was based on any tip-off from Ahmedabad blast accused Bashar about the terrorists' hideout. But he did confirm that the name of Atiq figured during the interrogation of Abu Bashar, one of the prime suspects in Ahmedabad blasts: "Atif was linked to Mohammed Usman Qureshi alias Tauqeer, the main mastermind behind serial bomb blasts in various parts of the country."

He said Delhi police had intelligence inputs on the presence of terrorists in the house, who were linked to the Delhi blasts and during a checking, the terrorists fired on the personnel.

Rumours of a Fake Encounter

Earlier, as the news about the encounter trickled in, and gun shots were heard, tensions ran high in the Jamia Nagar locality, as the house where the suspected terrorists were holed up is very close to Khalilullah mosque.

Once firing stopped, large number of people thronged the narrow lanes of the area and shouted religious slogans. "We are all against terrorism, then why was our religious places targeted?," asked one of the residents.

Refuting any such news, DCP South Delhi HGS Dhaliwal clarified that no religious place was used during the encounter. "The firing was done from a place near the religious place," he said.

The tensions were fuelled by rumours that the operation was concocted by police and no fire was shot from inside the house. Some TV channels had apparently also reported that the terrorists were hiding inside the nearby mosque.

As a result, some media personnel were abused by the local residents. They claimed that no shot were fired from inside the house and the encounter was a blatant lie.

Neighbours of the house where the entire operation unfolded, however, confirmed that gun shots were fired from both sides.

"It all started at 10.30 in the morning. We were preparing to go to our work when some police people came in the area," said an eye-witness who refused to disclose her identity. The police commissioner however claimed that the encounter started around 11am.

Police Version

According to the police version of events, a police team of 20 led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Sanjeev Yadav reached Jamia Nagar and took positions on the buildings around apartment block L-18 before between 9 and 10am.

Late Mohan Chand Sharma, Inspector of Delhi Police Special Cell

Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, who was not wearing his regulation bullet-proof jacket, knocked on the front door of an apartment on the fourth floor of L-18 building around 11 am. He asked the inmates of the house to come out for police verification. The police say the occupants, instead of coming out, opened fire from a .30 mm pistol.

The 41-year-old highly decorated Inspector was hit by three bullets -- in his abdomen, thigh and right arm. As he fell down, and the other policemen took shelter, head constable Balwant Singh suffered a bullet injury on his right hand. A profusely bleeding Sharma was taken to the nearby Holy Family Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries at 7 pm.

Meanwhile, senior police officials, including Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh and Deputy commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Alok Kumar arrived at Jamia Nagar. Various teams of the Special Cell are pressed into the service along with a platoon of elite National Security Guards commandos.

Teams wearing protective gear once again tried to move into the apartment. According to the police, they fired a total of 22 rounds; while the alleged terrorists inside the apartment retaliated with eight rounds.

Delhi Police Commissioner Dadwal said the police also recovered an AK-47 assault rifle along with two 0.30 pistols and a computer from the L-18 residence where the militants were staying for the past two months.

In his piece this Yousuf Saeed pretty much called this 'alleged encounter' as a premeditated Police killing, questioned whether there was really any firing from inside the house.
So, if there was no firing from inside the house, as he claims, then obviously, the police must have shot their own Inspector, just to give credibility to their claims, right???
As for trying to arrest criminals near places of worhip, there are no laws preventing the police from carrying out their lawful duties, inside or outside such places- murdering criminals cannot claim sanctuary in mosques, churches or temples- people must understand this.

Radhakrishnan, why are you bringing up the incidents in Karnataka; this article is about the Delhi incident. Are you trying to show that you are a sophisticated secularist who always must balance any Moslem perfidy and wrong-doing with (non-equivalent) Hindu behaviour? Awful!

It is amazing how casually our Police can take their duties. If they are on the beat duty on the street they are busy drinking free tea (I dont think a Policeman ever paid for his tea) or chit chatting with those around. If they are going in for special ops they don't wear bullet proof vests. In Mangalore, to please their political masters they combined forces with the Bajrang Dal when they were storming churches looking for women and children to beat up and arrest/detain for long periods of time. It it time for the Police to spruce up their act and work to potray feelings of being both respected and feared instead of hated and feared and hard work is needed to head for that goal now.

"But at the same time , we have to say Delhi police really messed up the whole operation.
It is very important to arrest these persons to elicit the information from them. "

Too bad the police did not listen to your advice. Next time you must go to the police headquarters to micro manage the operation.

Encounter fake!!

http://www.rediff.com/news/2008/sep/19shoot1.htm

A man has died in the encounter and the residents(since the religion was not mentioned, it is safe to assume they were muslims. If hindus had made similar comments and a temple was reportedly used, the rediff would have explicitly mentioned it) claim it fake.

This is just a beginning. I am waiting for Laloo to parrot this claim.

Thanks to Delhi police for this encounter to finish these inhuman creatures.
But at the same time , we have to say Delhi police really messed up the whole operation.
It is very important to arrest these persons to elicit the information from them.
If they die , valuable source of information to arrest the remaining terrorists would be lost.

On another count ,the terrorists would rejoice for the killing of an inspector of police that too the President's gold medals (five times) winner for bravery.
Terrorists count in terms of number not ,definitely not in terms of human lives lost. For them, it simple arithmatic, two of their cadres died against one decent officer. So far so good is what they think.
The death of the officer Mr.Sharma (may his soul rest in peace) reminds me one encounter by the Hyderabad police long back.
An ACP rank offcier simply went to question a muslim youth in the old city part of Hyderabad, and knocked on the door.
The door was not opened. The officer was intelligent enough to turn back to bring his pistol which was in his jeep. But it was too late.
The youth opened fire with an AK-47 right from inside the house killing the officer on the spot.
Interestlingly even the mother of this youth was involved in helping her son to open fire.
The moral of the story.
When you go to Muslim areas perticularly with a suspicion of investigating a case of terrorists or jehadi fanatics , go fully armed, with covering security by fully armed police men and do not forget a bullet proof jacket to wear.
And do not hesitate to open fire and kill the jehadi. You would be doing a great service to the human society and civilization.
If you just knock on the door with the hope of taking a jehadi to a police station for interrogation, you are seriously mistaken.
The officer should be ready with a gun, fully loaded , and ready to fire and then only knock on a door.
May God bless his soul.

This is not the first time that terrorists had been sheltered in Jamia Nagar.Previously too the Pak Terrorists who attacked Red Fort too were encountered in this locality. At that time Muslims too were on streets saying that innocents killed .

Question arises as to how the Terrorists are able to get shelter in Muslim Basties ?? They have no responsibility to Nation ?? Or they are aliens ??

Muslims have not realised yet that they are doing gevious injury to Muslims and India .Unfortunately Clergy, educated muslims and even Muslim press have washed their hands from the Terror by saying that Bajrangies are killing to spoil the name of Muslims.

This may balm their souls but it source of ridicule for all the community.

It also closes the doors of reconciliation.

Next ??? More isolation of Muslims.

Ganeshan

1.By now the message would have been gone to Police that NO More Encounters of the Muslims in the election year .Delhi Police has years long white washed the efforts of First Take , Arunjun Singh and Sachar.

2. How to believe those who were killed were not innocents ?? After all what is the proof ?? They should have been arrested and usual Court proceedure should have been gone through.

If we could not hang Afzal that does not means Police can kill Jehadies.

3. If really it was an encounter then let Teesta,Arunadhiti,Sikand ,Ramgarbrani ,Cair Maulvi ji etc confirm the Terrorists killed and no innocents have been killed.

4 I am waiting for Banerjee Commission to confirm also.

5.Shahi Imam will now create Riots like 1947.

Should we appologosise for the sake of peace??

That there is still hope for this country is revealed by the nature of the policemen and the army people who put their lives on the line.

The pay for the armymen and the policemen is pathetic. There is absolutely no respect for these people. The govt treats them like garbage. The useless central govt and state govt employees get pay hikes every 3-4 years while we rarely read stories about similar hikes for the army and the police men. The lives of the soldiers and the policemen who die fighting the terrorists and criminals are never remembered. The families of these people literally live and die in abject poverty. The so called pension given to the families wont last ten days in a month.

And yet there still are people who take up this profession and give everything they have-including their lives. Amazing. For all the sins committed by the people of this country, there must be some good that happened some time in the past. That is why these kind of soldiers are still born in this country.

"One of the dead has been identified as Atiq alias Basheer and is said to be an associate of Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) activist Tauqeer"

I refuse to believe this. If investigated properly, it will be revealed that he is a member of RSS.

"Mohan Chand Sharma, an inspector who led the team, and a head constable were injured in the heavy exchange of fire. "

The commitment of the policemen really amazes me. The country treats them like garbage. The policemen who fought the terrorists in the Parliament attack are all forgotten. The life of the pig Afsal is much more important to the govt than justice to the families of those policemen.

And yet there are policemen who still do their job-facing the terrorists as well as the shitty treatment from the govt and public in general. Really amazing people.
