What makes a star
a star in Bollywood? Looks, talent, luck? Outlook asks the people...
Namrata Joshi
Outlook's Bollywood Special this year looks at the very core of commercial cinema—the Hindi film star, the one who makes or breaks a film, box-office records, and people's hearts, whose appeal is of the moment, and enduring, time-tested and timeless, give or take a bomb or two.
And who better to tell us about it than the Hindi film audience—that unknown, amorphous mass of people who vote with their feet every Friday, first day, first show. We sought them out in Delhi and Mumbai, Lucknow and Jaipur, Bhopal and Chandigarh, and asked them to cast their vote for their favourite star of all time. We had no dearth of names, old or new, starting from post-Independence India. Towering over them all was, of course, the Big B. With 32 per cent of the votes, he won this round of the Big B-srk rivalry; Khan was a distant second with just 14 per cent votes. Big B daughter-in-law Aishwarya pipped yesterday's diva (though some would dispute that) Madhuri Dixit to the post with 21 per cent votes to the latter's 18 per cent. Sadly, the great stars of yore seem to have faded from the memories of our moviegoers—Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor figured behind the bland lookalikes of Gen Now.
The World Wide Web, however, is another story. The Big B is leading even in our ongoing poll on
outlookindia.com, with 26.02 per cent votes, but it's Aamir giving him a tough fight here with 21.95 per cent votes while
SRK is trailing with 11.38 per cent. The netizens also seem far more reverential to the heroes of the past, with Guru Dutt in fifth spot with 5.69 per cent votes. They know their women better too. Madhubala is on top with 15.97 per cent votes and dhak dhak Dixit is second with 14.29 per cent votes.
This, then, is the opinion poll, drawing out the big picture of Bollywood stardom. The accompanying articles examine its more paradoxical aspects—the gender bias, the quirkiness, the impermanence, the unfairness. Other questions follow. Do stars stifle creativity in Bollywood or do they compensate for the lack of it? Are today's stars too available? Have they moved away from the masses to focus on Shining India alone? And has Bollywood, smug in its own supremacy, forgotten that to understand true star worship, you have to travel all the way to Tamil Nadu?
A young and successful Bollywood scriptwriter was rather sceptical when I told him our theme this year: "What's there to look into stardom beyond the star and his or her fans?" Maybe nothing, maybe a lot. Read on.

Methodology: Research organisation Cfore conducted the survey among Hindi film-goers in Delhi,
Mumbai, Lucknow, Jaipur, Bhopal and Chandigarh between April 10-15, 2008. A structured questionnaire was given to a
statistically selected sample of 1,085 respondents, representing different age groups above 15 years, 45% of them female.
All figures are in percentage; stars who polled less than 1% have not been listed.
