A Cow-Wardly Turn
The Congress is a new convert to the ways of competitive Hindutva

When the rest of the world is discussing war, gdp and jobs, in India we are talking about beef and cow, its urine and dung. If ever we needed proof that Hindutva is out of sync with reality, modernity and sanity, this is it. And if you thought Hindutva was the worst thing to happen to Indian politics, think again. Far worse is "competitive Hindutva" which is plunging it into the pits.

If Diggy boy now lives till 200, we will know why. But then, we won't be around to celebrate the miracle.

Fishing for votes, politicians stoop to unimaginable depths. After all, this is India. "We are like this only."

The Hindutva brigade should give up their anti-conversion campaign. After all, they are the biggest beneficiaries of conversion. Not only have they converted the great Indian middle class to their way of thinking, they have even converted the venerable old Congress party! Converting friends and fence-sitters to their beliefs is credit enough, but converting historical foes is surely remarkable. Till now the BJP was the wannabe Congress. Now we have the Congress morphing into a BJP wannabe. Or maybe the Congress will cleverly swallow the BJP by adapting and assimilating its agenda in the manner that enabled Hinduism to survive through the centuries whenever it was under siege.

So there is Madhya Pradesh's Congress CM Digvijay Singh extolling the virtues of Mother Cow and her amber ambrosia. And we thought Diggy boy was the face of modern India! A man who believed in secularism and good governance. Now we know he has greater faith in cow urine—if not its curative powers, certainly its vote-catching lure. Morarji Desai lived in excellent health for 100 years ostensibly because he drank his own urine—and he was only an ordinary mortal. If Diggy lives 200 years, we'll know why though none of us will be around to celebrate this miracle.

From urine to uranium is a short hop. So too from MP to Rajasthan, also a Congress-ruled state facing elections. Don't be surprised if CM Ashok Gehlot, in the new spirit of competitive Hindutva, starts praising the hitherto unknown virtues of cow dung. He could usurp the cause of R.S. Gupta, UP State Cow Protection Commission chairman, who claims "houses with an outer coating of cow dung could be the safest place to be in during a nuclear attack". Gupta says there is evidence to support his theory in Hindu scriptures. How are these guys different from the jehadi devils who quote the Quran to kill? For scientific endorsement, UP animal husbandry minister L.K. Bajpai is now sending cow dung samples to the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. I wish I was making this up. With Pokhran II and a border with Pakistan, Rajasthan more than any other state has reason to think matters nuclear. That they should be thinking of drought, literacy, child marriage, disease and endemic poverty is another matter. But if the Congress were to sing paeans on the protective powers of dung in a N-attack, surely it will strike a chord among voters. Stealing issues from the VHP to swell its arsenal of competitive Hindutva?

While the rest of the world is striving to do away with capital punishment, the Hindutva brigade wants the death penalty for Indians who slaughter cows. It doesn't matter that people die of cold, hunger and preventable diseases, they insist the government should sanction a special budget of Rs 500 crore to protect cows. Cows are venerated—nobody denies that. Hindus don't eat beef, not out of compulsion but voluntarily. But the sacred cow's place is in religion, mythology and rituals, not in modern-day politics. If they really wanted to protect cows, the VHP should clean up our neighbourhood garbage dumps so that the abandoned, famished urban cows of India don't wind up swallowing plastic bags so painfully fatal to them. But then who said this is about protecting cows. It's all about ratcheting up emotions to win votes. One can't blame Hindutvawadis or their Congress clones for fabricating issues to get votes. One can only blame foolish voters who fall prey to such hypocritical, absurd political campaigns.

The Congress converts have imbibed other Hindutva lessons as well—such as spreading lies to corner the victim into denying something he never was guilty of. So they spread the canard that the liberal Hindu, Atal Behari Vajpayee, eats beef. Had this been true, he could perhaps have said he was being a true Brahmin in the ancient tradition. But the poor man, like most Hindus, doesn't eat beef. Cut to the bone, a wounded PM and his party worked overtime to shrug off the unfair label. Welcome to the club!

Pro-BJP supporters used to lambast the Congress for pandering to the Muslims to get votes: the Shah Bano case, declaring Urdu an official language or Prophet Mohammad's birthday a holiday were the sticks they beat the Congress with. But the Hindutvawadis' diabolical games now make the Congress antics of yore seem like childplay. The ruthless cynicism of the Sangh's electoral politics, evident in MP's 'Bhojshala stir', bears this out. Suddenly, a new Hindu outfit wants to "liberate" this temple a la Ayodhya, stirring communal tensions, provoking police action. Suddenly we have curfews, bandhs and riots. An issue is blown up to manufacture tension and polarise communities with the sole aim of winning votes. What can be more diabolical than this? None of this has anything to do with temples or cows, the divine or the bovine. It's Indian politicians stooping to the depths to conquer. If only we weren't like this.

I agree. Visiting India I see cows abandoned and
walking dazed in traffic, or trying to get something to eat. Usually rubbish, even plastic bags.

The hypocrisy of Hindu's is amazing.

Listen guys, Anita Pratap writes,"how these guys are different from the jehadis who quote Koran to kill?". Does Koran say anything like that? I thought it was the most tolerant, understanding and peaceful religious text in the world!! Am I mistaken?
Is Anita Pratap still alive or will she be forced to run for life like Rushdie???If what jehadis quote is true, should not that book be banned all over the world except in islamic countries and should not all preachers and followers who live according to that book be charged as criminals and hate mongers who deserve many many years in jail???
If what jehadis quote is true, india must not wait a moment to ban that hate book and book all criminals and hate mongers who preach murder against infidel kafirs and their places of worship!!! Don't you agree???

Anita Pratap is rightfully indignant and yet, I would still like to admire Digvijay. To clean a system, you need to be around. To do that, you need to win elections. If the electorate prefers to be spoken in the "bovine" language, so be it !! As long as we see Digvijay continue to do what is necessary for the progress of the state (and he has been doing an admirable job, we all know), once every 5 years, i am willing to forgive him his electoral managerial skills. And oh yes! I cannot hide my glee when i see someone pay back the BJP in it's same coin and watch them squirm !!! Bravo, Diggy, Bravo!!

This is a typical anglophile Indian's predictable reaction.Isn't it the semi-educated anglophiles who are the ones that also add to the garbage on Indian streets ? Take the example of Bombay, sorry Mumbai, and New Delhi...who do you see throwing litter on the streets, out from their balconies of theie "posh' residences ?
Why blame the Cow-lovers ? How about the Sow-lovers ? Haven't you seen them ?
The anglo-philes who are "sticklers for cleanliness in 'others' should help clean the streets ? ?

Dear Sir?madam,
Ms Anita Pratap's article is written unfortunately to hurt the feelings of millions of innoscent Hindus all across the Country. She does not even mention the name of Mahatma Gandhi who wanted a ban on cow slaughter all over the country. It is not the BJP which is pushing it but the majority of the people in the country want a ban on cowslaughter. In a democracy whether you like it or not ,you have to go with the majority opinion. The Congress which has used the Minority muslims as their vote bank does not want to support an all india ban.The Muslims who have been enjoying the continuous humiliation of the Idiotic and stupid Hindu majority want to use this issue as unifying force for communal politics. Many researchers have found evidence of antiseptic capabilities of the COW DUNG.Infact it was shown that except Tetanus, no other organism survives in the Cowdung media bexause of its PH and high chlorophyll content.Chinese books on ancient medicines have chapters on the use of urine both Human and animal.Even in USA some biotech, pharma companies ahve tried to extract Steroids from the Urine of pregnant women. Many herbs some grown in Gujarat(Vinkola plant) has been used to manufacture Vincristine , very potent anticancer drug.Since Cows are most of the time vegetarians , are definitely a source of further study.Nice to know that the BJP folks are converting every body ! Hope they will continue this crusade to convert this perverted journalists in the media and the press in India.

But Shivrajji, you forget that it is Congress which introduced the ban on cow slaughter in india, not now but many decades back. It was also put in the constitution as a directive principle of state policy? you know why? to appease the majority Hindus? or to appease the minority of those hindus who want to make cow slaughter an issue but not man slaughter? and we talk of appeasement of muslims by Congress! I am no congress supporter and wouldn't vote for those Sikh-killers of 1984 but let's get our facts right, please. BJP? Less said about them the better.

Re:Cow-wardly Turn
In my opinion, Ms.Pratap has not singled out the a main problem with BJP's policies. In trying to attack the BJP and the Congress on the holy-cow-issue, she has lost an opportunity to expand on the economic and political issues challenging the countries. I hope next time she articulates her views so that the reader understands the loss that he suffers on account of the incompetent and inefficient governance.
A recent incident highlights India's position in the international arena.
Last Sunday, 200+ IT professionals were rounded in Malaysia and trated worse than cattle. As a NRI, I hope that the indignity suffered by my fellow IT professionals will be duly compensated (can it?) by an unconditional and unqualified APOLOGY.
WHY did this happen? Doen't it suggest a political misgiving?
The truth is that India is perceived as a impoverished, corrupt and soft nation. We are trated with utter contempt even by nations like Bangladesh.
Our government(s) are not focussing on economic issues. The free press has been unable to halt the unhealthy and divise politics. I hope it does so in the near future.

I agree with you. We are a despised people almost all over the world because,we do not have any self-respect,any National pride,we bend backwards to please others for a few pennies,we do not have any unity amongst ourselves. North Indians look down upon fellow South Indians, and club any body living below the Vindhyas as "Madrasis",this is my personal experience after living in North India for over 20 years.
We deserve to be despised unless we develop a National outlook,a one-ness amonmg all indians which is sadly missing and being buttressed by the highly regionalised and caste-ridden politics. Jawaharlal Nehru had been warned by Rajgopalachari, not to succumb to Potti Sroramulu and give rise to linguistic states...he had foreseen such miserable consequences, but Nehru would ot listen...giving rise to this larger Diversity and very small unity among us... !

Even today,we think of ourselves as bengalis, biharis,Maharashtrians, tamilians etc., first, and then if opportunity presents itself,as Indians.

We don't have a National Religion,we continue to bicker over 'Vande Mataram',just because a section of our populace refuses to venerate the Country as the Mother (!) amd so on...

How can we become ONE NATION ?

Only GOD can help our half-baked intellectuals whose minds (and souls) are for sale,to the highest bidder...

The whole world laughs at us for a very simple thing...They have yet to come across 4 Indians sitting at a table and agree on any one issue.!!!

Politicians do exploit the credulity of the masses. But the Author is the one who is a coward. I personally challenge her to similarly dissect what the Christians or Muslims hold sacred. In my opinion she will not do the first because she will be sued or the second because she will get killed.

With due respect, madam I am appalled your ignorance. Cow protection has a practical value in addition to the sentimental or religious philosophical. Contact me directly and I will explain it nicely to you. Please do not mislead the public. To show our ethos in a negative light is like stripping one's mother in the street. No western scholar does that.I fold my hands to you madam please don't do that.

Mira, a culture or an ethos is never wholly positive. Neither are they static. They change and should be the subject of vigorous criticism, debate and praise. Western scholars do this all the time, and have been doing so since the time of Aristotle. This is not the same "as stripping one's mother in the street," a comparison which has been made by you, and which is vulgar. It is but natural that an ethos is part of public discourse because we all live it. Your disagreement with the author is a part of this process.

Thank you for telling us 'orrible 'indoos what to do and not do, much obliged. Enough has been said about that. Now please let us concentrate on some home truths like how to feed people, provide them an option from peeing and squatting everywhere and most of all, educating them. But, I guess, that's not fashionable when we would rather throw stones at larger stones called devils, or transfer spit from paedophiliac priests into babies, right?

Be glad that you can write an article like this on Hinduism in a predominently Hindu country. Can you say the same of any other religious group in such a derogatory and ignorant way in their very own country?

This articles existence is ample proof of Hindu tolerance. The case is closed.

I am not shocked to read such an article in outlook.Attacking hindus and their holy symbols has become your favorite passtime. But I am deeply depressed to see your magazine giving prominence to such leftists and not giving opposition a chance to speak up.While i am happy that you publish even vulgar letters deploring you, what we expect is publishing an article with opposite view in your magazine. And also balance the articles.Atleast give the real hindus a 10% spcae in your "pravda" sorry "outlook" magazine.

Cow is attched to the emotions of the majority of the population. In democracy, the rule of the number is the principle. For the emotional well being of the majority, cow slaughter should be banned. Can the writer tell me why "Islamic" nations dont allow pork to be sold in their country.I am sure she will have no answer but she will pretend as it is correct for Muslims to protect their faith and emotions but not right for Hindus to do so..So fuck her
