Ours must have been the third or the fourth house built in Golf Links. The land was
bought by my father-in-law for apparently Rs 25,000 and the house built for a
lakh-and-a-half. What I like most about the area is its proximity to the large, green golf
course, from where it takes its name. Golf Links is also very central. When my children
were young, they could go for riding to the Presidents Polo Grounds or swim at
Talkatora, go to the zoo and the rail museum. Even their school, Modern, was an easy
commute. Even now, we can go for a lecture at the iic or a film at the Habitat Centre
without advance planning.
Khan Market, with its six good bookshops, is next door. So is Nizamuddin. The dargah there
is one of my favourite places and I love listening to the qawwalis there, particularly
during the Urs. Aap ki Khatir serves the best kakori kebabs in town. Lodhi
Gardens is nearby.
What I do not like about Golf Links is that our road and pavements are changing for the
worse. The main road was a single carriage way earlier, with the other side reserved for
parking. Now, the other side has become part of a dual way. This increased traffic on the
road has become fast. Fatal and near-fatal accidents keep occurring regularly. Also, the
golf club has now arbitrarily raised its wall, depriving the residents of the verdant
view.
